Anyone going this weekend? I'm scheduled to be arrive off a red-eye Friday morning and I'll be there until Sunday. If you're going, Tiger Claw will have a table and you can meet em there. Remember, forum members can pose for a photo in the mag ;)
Well, this wasn't very popular here last year, but we'll see if that has changed. Anyone going this year? I have a serious red-eye flight on Thursday and will be there by Friday (what is it with ZSF and the red-eye flights?)
i'm surprised you didnt give yourself a shameless plug when you linked to this event with your crouching tiger pose ;)
That's cuz it's volunteer, meaning I make the same amount if one shows or if forty show. If forty show, it's a lot more work... :p
well i was thinking more about showing the cool photo :) now you just need a qing era hairdo. ha
That photo is three years old. I sent them a new one in an actual martial arts pose, but they didn't use it. I guess the pose sucked. :o As for my hair, it was cut right after that pic was taken, but it's grown out since. I'm going for a sort of disheveled Ronin look now, partly out of office political protest, but mostly out of general sloppiness. I've been hoping it grows out so I can tie it up like in an old Shaw Brothers movie soon, but I might not make it.
gene this sounds soo much cooler

I'm leaving for the Poconos in a few hours. BTW, this will be our last Jet Li poster raffle for Tiger Claw Foundation - it all ends on Monday, when I get back. Hope to see some of you out there at the ZSF Fest - it is their 30th anniversary!
Well, that red-eye, I barely slept. My eyes were closed for about three hours, but I was still not really sleeping. Friday and Saturday I wound up drinking with Master David Chin's Hop Gar guys, John Painter, Gary Torres, Jim Donally and a few other assorted characters, and only got about 3 hours sleep those nights. Then last night, my flight was delayed and I wound up stranded in Phoenix for a few hours. I think I got four hours last night. I wa feeling ok until after lunch. Now I'm sleepy.
Didn't see a single person from the forum, or at least I didn't realize if I did, but lots of magazine fans. It was fun.
Well, it's that time of year again. I'm cathing an early morning flight on Friday and should be at the Zhang San Feng Festival and Tao of Health Expo by the evening. I'm meeting two Tiger Claw operatives, Rand Cardwell, author of The Western Bubishi and someone named Chris from the TN warehouse. As always, if you're from the forum, do check in with me. We aren't doing the forum members shots anymore, but it's always nice to meet people in the flesh. Hope to see you out there!
Ill try and stop by when I get there Sunday, Gene. I look forward to meeting you in person.
Be well,
Dale Dugas
Gene, you look cool and fierce with that long hair. Just like somebody out of a Shaw Bros. flick.Quote:

Strange but true, I was voted "Most likely to star as a villain in a kung fu movie" by Teri Hatcher. Well, that's not really true, I was voted that by my graduating High School class and Teri was in my class, but I think she might have taken the equivalency exit exam to pursue modelling, and even if she didn't I don't know if she voted for me in that role. Nevertheless, I feel that my present position is fulfillment of High School prophesy.
I look forward to meeting you too, Dale Dugas. See you Sunday!
I had caught a slight cold on Tuesday, exacerbated by some allergy meds I'm on, and by the time I had to board the plane on Friday, I was sick as a dog. I'm sure my airplane neighbors loved my coughing fits. Anyway, the 2nd leg of my Oakland>Dallas>Newark flight, got cancelled and I got rerouted through O'hare, where I experienced two flight delays. A 9-hour in-transit expanded to a 15 hour nigthmare and by the time I arrived, my cough sounded like a barking walrus after a harsh crack hit. I coughed so hard that I popped a blood vessal in my eye (and old injury from a finger jab I took sparring in High School, beleive it or not). Not good for any event for me, because I have to do a lot of talking and it's hard to have a conversation that way. Plus I was scheduled to do two workshops, one on writing (where I had to talk a lot, of course, thank God for microphones) and one on Xingyi sword. The Xingyi sword one was at the end, and I was pretty exhausted. My Tiger Claw cohorts, Rand Cardwell and Chris Peanut-Butter-Train, were loading out when I finished, and we took off immediately after but I did get to shake hands with the man, the myth, Dale Dugas on my way out. Dale, I wish we could have talked a little longer, but I'm glad we at least touched base.
Anyway, you'll be able to read my 'official' review in our next issue going into production, the NOV/DEC 2006. Until next year....
Gene,
It was great to meet up with you in PA. Love the hair!
Dr. Painter kicked my arse for the week.
Off to digest the material presented.
Hope all is well with you and yours.
Gene,
Ive been invited to teach Iron Palm and Iron Vest via seminars at the Festival. Are you going to be around at all this year?
Look forward to seeing you there brother!
Be well,
Yes, I'm scheduled to be there. Jim's been after me to do another writing workshop and another sword workshop, but I'm leaning towards doing a xingyi spear one instead of the sword.
Good to hear brother. Look forward to seeing you there.
Gentlemen,
You have both given me 3 more reasons to attend the festival again this year, can not wait. Last year was my first time there and Gene's seminars were outstanding, I was the heavy set Navy guy who is still attempting Xingyi, beem checking the sight regularly fort registration info. And I have been reading alot on the yahoo groups posted by Mr. Dugas so I am definitely interested in his seminars also. Already dropped my leave chit for June, looking forward to it.
Sorry to hop on this chat,
V/R
Joshua Durham
Thanks for your kind words on my work. You'll be glad to know that the video for that 5 Element Xingyi Sword will be available by April. In fact, I'm just putting the finishing touches on some promotional material for it now. I'm planning to the the 5 Element Xingyi Staff/Spear this year, so you'll have to check that out. The video for that will be ready by next month too.
When (and where) is this?
It's the Zhang San Feng Festival. Maybe I'll merge this thread with this one later.
Gene,
Thanks for the info, I have been looking and waiting for these since you told us about them. Hopefully I will be able to get them before I head up to PA. Has there been any definite info on the festival yet, I have seen dates but besides yourself, Mr. Dugas and of course the week intensive with Dr. Painter I have not found any info.
Thanks,
Joshua Durham
Joshua,
They will have the info out very soon. The people who set up the festival do it themselves pretty much and have their hands tied getting it all hammered out.
I look forward to meeting you at the festival. I will have my Iron Palm DVD as well as lots of bottles of various medicines with me for sale.
Are you going to attend the weeklong Bagua seminar as well?
Be well,
Dale Dugas
Gene
With who do you study Xing Yi? Looking forward to some of the videos!
Bummer, wish I could make the fest, but alas no funding! :(
Have fun guys,
Jake :)
Dale,
Thanks for the info, been letting myself get too anxious. I will definintely be participating in your workshops, I have always been curious about these types of trainings but have never had the chance to train in them. I will be definintely looking for your table when I am there and also look forward to meeting you. My leave chit for the Navy has already been approved so I will get to stay for the post week also. Have absolutely no experience in Bagua with the exception of a workshop with Dr. Painter last year which I absolutely loved so I will be there .
Respectfully,
Joshua Durham
Great news brother! I look forward to seeing you there.
Until then be well.
Dale
Jake: I study xingyi with Tony Chen. Nowadays, I focus on xingyi sword mostly.
Joshua: We've announce the new videos in our May June issue which is currently at press. That issue will be on stand in the beginning of April so those videos will be available at that time. We are releasing four xingyi DVDs: 5 Element Staff & Spear, 5 Element Sword, 12 Animal Staff & Spear and 12 Animal Sword. These are all under the auspices of Grandmaster Liang Shou-yu and feature Helen Liang, Tony Chen and He Tao. I was just looking at one of the near-to-final versions of the 12 Animal sword DVD.
they should invite this guyhttp://dragontigerkungfucenter.com/ he sez he studied under Sun Lu-Tang.
I think he is giving credit to Sun, but it sure reads like he studied directly under him doesn't it!?!? Unless he is about 100 years old he is FOS!
Thanks Gene. Look forward to some of the new vids and the new issue:)
Cheers
Jake :D
So maybe he's only 75 ;). Sun Cunzhou died in '63 so that's a little more feasible.
I studied with Sun Jianyun, who died in 2003. I used to credit her in my martial vitae. In fact, if you look at some of the Zhang San Feng Festival programs when I first attended, I list her. I figured she'd be a good one to credit in for that festival. But in truth, I only studied with her for a very short time. I took a few private lessons when in Beijing in '96, and then took a group lesson in '98 (which was actually in xingyi with her student while she was supervising, and I was really sick with Mao's revenge, so that barely counts). Sun style has totally fallen out of my practice and I'd be hard put to remember the pattern of the form now, so I've stopped listing her. At first, I felt it was good to list her just so her name was more exposed, but after a while, I felt it was doing her a great disservice since I'm not a very good example of Sun style anymore.
Ironically, when my own master Shi Decheng was out here last month, we had a discussion about how students credit him as their master. He was amused that one of his disciples from China now doesn't claim him to be his master anymore, due to political reasons. He was also amused that so many students in the west claim him as their master, a lot of people who he doesn't even know or remember. He thought the whole thing was rather amusing, but he's pretty laid back about that sort of thing.
Anyone who is interested, the registration is up and going for the festival now. Looks like some great stuff this year, something for everyone. Registration and workshop info is availible at www.taichifest.com. Much easier site to navigate if you have been there before. Great opportunity, recommend to anyone to go.

James Donnelly will be Officially Inducted into the U.S.A. Hall of Fame, March 3rd, 2007 in New York! The only way to become an Inducted Member is to have your fellow peers nominate you!
Let it be known James Donnelly, has been Officially Inducted. Many years of commitment will prove to have paid off! Instructors will from around the Nation were present and accepted these awards!
I don't study Tai Chi but looking at it logically..it seems pretty far fetched.
Ethically..it reminds me of what my sifu tells me about instructors taking a couple of lessons or their picture taken at a seminar with a legendary instructor and then opens a school and claims they are a "lifelong" student/disciple..or worse yet..a closed door disciple that noone seems to be able to verify.
A certain Wing Chun master who likes to use self agrandizing titles has been known to spin some yarns..ahem!
Back to this instructors webpage..I don't know of Lao Kim or Johnny Chooten..but don't most sifus study under their own teacher and not 2 teachers above their instructor at the same time?
Seems sketchy to me. And if he's only paying homage..he does not represent his training that way...
Erasmus,
Who are referring to in your post?
What instructor?
Thanks,
Dale Dugas
Dale,
Jan Miller.
btw, where/when is the Zhang San Feng festival? Is it ever held in various locations throughout the country?
EM
It's been held at East Strousberg University in the Poconos for the past five years. See their website here.
Ahh,
I saw the link someone had posted. I know Rene Navarro(who Mr. Miller lists as one of his teachers) Shifu Navarro is one of the nicest deadliest men to walk the planet.
If you can, come to the festival and meet up with Gene and I and the others who will be there. Its not a bad get together for MA people
Soooooo, aside from Dale, Joshua and me, will there be anyone else at ZSF this weekend?
