The Lady Assassin Mỹ nhân kế, a 3-D martial arts fantasy film from Vietnam, has broken opening records for a local film. According to investor and distributor Galaxy Studio, it took approximately $576,000 (₫12 billion) at the weekend.

The previous record holder was Charlie NGUYỄN's Big Boss Long ruồi (2011) which secured approximately $432,000 (₫9 billion) in Aug 2011. The gangster action-comedy finally grossed about $2 million.

In The Lady Assassin THANH Hằng plays the owner of Duong Son Quan Tavern who, with the help of her team of lethal waitresses (NGỌC Quyên, KIM Dung and DIỄM My), murders the corrupt government officials and businessmen who visit.

When an innocent young woman (TĂNG Thanh Hà) arrives at the seaside tavern — whose family has been killed by the evil general Quan Du — they train her to become a skilled assassin so that she can take bloody revenge for her family.

Assassin targets the Tết (New Year) holidays, which officially falls on 10 Feb.

Also opening at the weekend were Bay vào cơi mộng, about a woman who becomes a kungfu master when she sleepwalks, and Nhà có 5 nàng tiên, about the parents of five adopted girls who have grown up too soon for them.

Foreign films opening in the coming days include WONG Kar-wai 王家衛's The Grandmaster 一代宗師, Warm Bodies, A Good Day to Die Hard, Parker, omnibus Movie 43 and the 3-D re-mastered Monsters, Inc (2001).

Directed by NGUYỄN Quang Dũng, The Lady Assassin is Vietnam's second home-brewed 3-D film. Two years ago, LÊ Bảo Trung's horror Bóng ma học đường (2011) also opened during the Tết holidays.

The Lady Assassin has a reported budget in excess of $720,000 (₫15 billion).

    Found a trailer

Cảnh nóng Tăng Thanh Hà - Phim Mỹ Nhân Kế 3d

Can we say 'sword hotties'? Maybe even volleyball fu?

I wonder if there's any connection to the 1983 Shaw Brothers flick The Lady Assassin.
