BSL Lyrics: Shaolin #1 (Open the Door)

This is a big one. OK, is that a bad pun or what?

My favorite adage about this one was that in final run of kicks and slaps following move 58 should sound like a string of 18 firecrackers - BANG! BANG! BANG! etc... What a finale!

I also dig lyric 65. It totally captures the spirit of that movement.

KOY MOON: SHAOLIN #1 (Open the door)
    1. Rolling the wrists, tiger sitting pose.
    2. Phoenix circles its nest.
    3. Immortals hand salute.

    15. Black tiger runs up the mountain.
    16. Hawk turns in flight, fishing pole pose.
    17. Hook and upward block, horse position.
    18. Left heel kick.
    19. Mount Tai crushes the head.
    20. Turn around, hook hand and left heel kick.
    21. Hook and upward block, horse position.
    22. Spinning wheel, continuous back step.
    23. White horse flying kick.
    24. Arm turns to hooking hand, left kick.
    25. Double dragon spits its whiskers.
    26. Turn around, finger jab with "cross" character kick.
    27. Left and right single leg strike.
    28. Double kick.

    38. Right outside crescent kick.
    39. Lion opens its massive jaws.
    40. Turn around, hooking strike, fishing pole pose.

    Gene,

Exactly the same as what I learned which should be expected since we are of the same lineage of YSW. Some of the translations are a little different such as in:

#23 White Horse Flies its Hoof
#31,33 &41 Rush against Strike, Seize the Wagging Tiger's Tail
#46 Swallow goes thru the curtain
#47 Double Wind Strikes the Ears
#65 Monkey Disturbed by Itch, Catches the Bee

This set should have 36 kicking techniques (this also includes sweeps) with #46 being the 21st or 22nd kick.

Now LTH students do not have #46 as we do it. They have a Right Lotus Kick with a move just before it called Horse Arrives with Victory, Double Hooks with single kick to face.

They also call Catching the Tiger Pose or Seize the Tiger's Tail another name...Night Demon Searches the Sea, Seizes the Tiger which is really a completely different move in NSL #9.

Are we the only BSL students with lyrics?

Well, after we're done here, that'll change. I'm a little disappointed that more BSL followers haven't jumped in on this one Maybe they just can't keep up with us, cousin.

Again, I suspect the translation variations are decended from the exact same Chinese characters. They certianly sound the same. I'm actually impressed that the English is so similar. If you've ever done any translation, you know how much variation occurs.

Very interesting about the LTH line. I'm trying to visualize the variation but I can't quite see it. Maybe by the time we get to #9 the second part will make more sense. The first part, well, I'm not sure what "Horse Arrives with Victory, Double Hooks with single kick to face" but I could guess double hooks & single kick must be like in the first part of #7, yes? I assume "Horse Arrives with Victory" is that old chengyu about speed meaning that this is a very quick move, or is it another technique?

We call the last move (before the single leg stance) "Hero Shoots Eight Suns", it's a bit different from the move you have listed as "Iron Ox.." which occurs after the split in that instead of punching down towards the foot, we lean away and punch towards tha face... this is the same way that our #8 ends.

I think the "eight suns" is a reference to the story of Archer Yu, one of the Chinese creation myths...

i wish i had some lyrics to post! i just know the names of a few moves, whichever ones my teacher has learned from his teacher he tells us when we're learning the form, but i've never learned the songs for any of the sets...

    Gene,

the answer is Yes it is like NSL#7.

The technique, Horse Arrives with Victory is in NSL#3 so how LTH manage to fit it into NSL#1 is hard to figure out. It could have been a miss print.

    I guess I'll re-open the door.

This doesn't deserve its own thread, but here's some footage of me doing #1 (I think in 2003). I sucked, but the video is done pretty well. It was made by a film student from De Anza college. He just put it up on YouTube, which means I can share it with you guys.

That was cool, I like the white against the black. You guys don't do the splits after the kick to the forehead, interesting? We use a slightly different flavor in our BSL.

    Nice, Lokhopkuen.

We do the splits in #1, too. The floor was very rough where we were filming, which made it hard to slide down into them smoothly.

Got Cha! When I find those types of conditions I cheat. Kick up, swing the leg down and back sliding the sole of the shoe along and catch my weight on the palms then snap the hands back up pretending I never touched the floor
I guess you wouldn't want to on those nice white silks!

    Gene;
Shooting 8 suns references the legend that there were once 9 suns in the sky and the earth was unbearably hot so the great Archer drew his bow and shot down 8 suns! I have seen some translations that say hero draws the bow.

Hey this thread was started years ago!

I'm around, still here in LA, back and forth to China, Philly, NYC staying BZ.

Ya know If you listen real close on the audio track, every time just as I leap you can hear the toot of the "fung duk" (secret back door jet pack music) which is why my old carcass can still levitate.

Bakxierboxer you are in that vids standing near the entrance carrying a big sword in a case.

Good, somebody's got to do the dirty work of keeping us oldsters visible.

You mean the really little guy in black?
I don't recognize me any more.......
    (maybe that's a "good thing"?)

There were a couple of other vids you linked to... were either of them from that grand opening you had on Pico?
