CLF in Vancouver, Canada

OK everyone. . . . a shift of plans, unfortunately. I might be a little short on $$$ to attend Arizona State Uni, although if I save enough money in due time I will be transferring there (I actually really want to go there).

ANYWAYS --

Here's the dealie.

I'm probably going to attend Western Washington University, located in Bellingham which is like a ferry ride away from Canada. Vancouver is REALLY close, and I've heard there are some good CLF schools there.

Anyone have any links?

I've read that one of Tarm Sarm's students "Leong Ji" lives there. . . but I can't dig up any information.

leong e is also known as Lun Chee. he is in his late 90's if he's still alive.

i have his phone number.but he is very suspicious of anyone just showing up on his doorstep.

but lun chee is well respected and revered for his status. as wll, he helped the singapore hsk defeat some shaolin monk who was pretty fearsum.

Thanks Frank. Yeah I've read all that stuff on both sites, as they contain a lot of good information. I wouldn't know really how to approach an CLF elder like that though, but I'd appreciate any help or anything. Mabye in his old age he might not want to teach anymore or something. . . . who knows.

Any links to any other schools would be great, as well as individual teachers that are not listed anywhere.

I am looking for someone that will teach me how to fight, not look pretty or just do it mainly for exercise or something.

Lun Chee doesn't teach anymore so you can scratch that.

Hilbert Yiu teached CLF in Vancouver; however he has incorporated some wushu into his style.

Wong Ha has some students in the area that also teach, although Wong Ha himself has retired from teaching.

Why don't you ask your sifu?

There is quite alot of CLF in Vancouver.

Hilbert Yiu is quite good, and teaches at ShungYing in Richmond I believe.

Though Wong Ha is now retired (in his 80`s) he has many students that are teaching in Vancouver and Richmond. Heres a couple links:

I met one sifu in Calgary about 10 years back who taught in Vancouver. I forget her name but she is a disciple of Tam Fei Pang. Cant remember her name but may be findable through connections.

I know that Leung Yap Yau used to be teaching in Vancouver as well. He followed Lun Chee, Tam Fei Pang, and Chui Kwong Yeun. Its possible he or his students are still teaching there.

The last time I saw Lun Chee he was in Calgary, and I think he still lives there. But of course training with him is out of the question, he is in his mid-90`s now!

CLF in Vancouver for the most part all comes from GM Wong Ha recently retired. His students that carry on teaching include;

Peter Wong with the Hon Hsing Athletic Ass'n in Van's Chinatown (across from Chinese Cultural Center)

Mathew Wing at the Strathcona Community Center near Chinatown

Carmen Choy & Hailey Wong at the Hung Sing Kung Fu Club in Richmond

Tony Lee in Willingdon Heights in Burnaby

Gary Seto with his Seto's Kung Fu Studio

Hilbert Yiu at both Renfrew Community Center & his Richmond Shung Ying Club

Paul Tam (student of Hilbert Yiu) teaches at several Vancouver locations including UBC

Doing CLF but not affliated with Wong Ha is Gary Ng of Richmond Martial Arts Center and GM Yang Chun Ho (retired).

gary seto has moved his studio to a different location. it is not the one that is stated on his site anymore.

hilbert yiu usually teaches at the renfew community centre. his student paul tam is also a head instructor at the richmond branch

you also have Master Siu Man Loong who teaches wing chung and hung sing CLF. he is a student of CHui Kwong Yuen.

Siu Man Loong actually teaches in Calgary. He followed both Wong Ha and Chui Kwong Yuen.

Check out schools when you there if you can't find what you are looking for you also might want to consider Sifu Chan Sau Chung of the Tai Sing Pek Kwar Mun style. Although a northern style the transition from CLF wouldn't be too bad. They use a pek choy that is somewhat similar to our usage of the sow choy.

Sifu Chan was good friends with Lee Koon Hung and well known for putting out top notch full contact fighters. He is older now so I am not sure what the curriculum is geared towards but it is worth a look.

By the way I thought Vancouver isn't that far from Seattle, couldn't you go back and train with your sifu assuming you have a car?

I can. And I will, but it won't be as often as I like.

I've been talking to Fu-Pow, he suggested Sifu Eddie Lane's school; he said it's good, so I will definitely be checking that out.

I know Pek Choy, i prefer it over Gwa Choy actually. . . . . . . .

No links for GM Chan Sau Chung, his website has been down for some time.

This is a link to one of his top students Sifu Chow Keung of Hong Kong, the website is in chinese though. I have trained with him and his kung fu is very good.

Tai Sing Pek Kwar is a combination of two styles: Tai Sing (Great Sage) is the monkey part and Pek Kwar (Axe Fist) is an older system with Shaolin origins. The style was founded by Ken Dak Hoi, who was Chan Sau Chung's sifu.

Although you have been exposed to the pek choy/chin si choy in CLF they use it a bit different than we do.
