in your experience do you think thats a skillset i could develop on my own through trial and error?

of course then having a place to practice that is my major problem also, i dont live in a house, so no backyard for me.

Well, if you have no place to train it's kind of a moot point, no?
But, sword work is a system that can be trained solo very well, IF you have the test cutting.
The footowrk and timing is developed by sparring of course, but the actual use of a sword can be developed "on your own", but just be ready to lose some blades !
LOL !
Test cutting is crucial, really, I can't say it enough, if you fo NOt cut through something you will never get the angle right and if you don't cut you wil never get the grip correct either.
You don't need much space really, just overhead issues more than any other.

well, to be honest i could probably pull that off in my apartment, my ceiling is pretty high, plus i can just drop my stance some.

we used to toss pillows at each other and practice cutting them in the air lol. not really helpfull im sure, but it was fun. i used to set up boxes and cut those too, but ive never had the traditional wound up soaked mats.

another fun game we used to play with bokken is to have someone throw rocks at you, hard, then you had to deflect or block them with the bokken. another silly but super fun game.

Glad someone else brought it up.

It is an art from in of itself.
I once made a shot 980 meters out with 40K winds coming off the right, with a .308.
On a down slope too !
