    evidently

but, you know, I do think it's not the best thing for us to do.

No amount of bashing we do is going to stop schools like this
from giving people the wrong information or others the wrong
    impression of ma.

Unfortunately it's basically against the law to walk up and
challenge a school owner to a fight to prove he doesn't know
jack sh it. I think that's called assault, even in england.

Stoopid people will flock to places like this because they think
it's cool. That's fine. Let them go. It keeps them from pestering
the good schools who have better things to do.

Just think of it as culling the gene pool, smile and go on.

I am not bashing them to try and warn people against going there - I am bashing them for a bit of a laugh. Very bad of me I know, but you gotta get your kicks somehow

joedoe, true enough. It is funny. If I wasn't competing with this
tkd guy for the market share I'd be laughing more. As it is, I'm
trying to smile and let him have the people who think he's got it.
I've got several other good ma schools to think about as well.
    As business competition, that is.

But, without going as far as KL did in his admonishment (which
obviously got me thinking a little), doesn't it sort of diminish you
when you make fun of something(one) else?

just thinking about it, you know.

I knew you were going to say that.

I don't know. In some ways you could say yes it diminishes me, but only in the eyes of others. I guess it is considered to be behaviour that a decent person would not indulge in.

However, I'd like to think that in my poking fun at them there is no malice intended. a) I don't live in that part of the world so what they do doesn't really affect me that much. b) Everyone does things differently and what may look funny to me may work perfectly well for someone else. However that doesn't mean I cannot laugh about it. c) I am just having fun

When all is said and done though, this is an internet forum and joedoe is not my real name . Very few people here actually know me so really, what the general population of the forum thinks of my behaviour doesn't bother me. Don't get me wrong - I don't go out of my way to be offensive, but I come here and do whatever I want and say whatever I want because I can. If the mods think that I am too far out of line then they can ban me and I will be no worse off for it.

nah, just be nice about it. ask him to spar. hard. Tell him that you are from another style and are interested in seeing how his style is applied in sparring.

Nicely designed? To me its cynical. Lots of information about street crime-then they more or less state that their class is the only one with the answer!!

I feel the teacher is trying to cash in on peoples fears about their own saftey. The really worriying thing is that he is making thease guys less safe and probably more scared than they need to be.
LOL.. really, what else did you hear?.. did you hear that he was voted Man of the Year by Kung-Fu Magizine?

Okay, I'll bite. What in the world does "12th degree (combined)" mean? Does he have 6th degrees from two seperate organizations or what?

Oso, it isn't against the law to go to the school and ask to spar or compare notes.
I recently went to a local wingchun seminar and kept volunteering to be the dummy for demonstrations. I walked away knowing full well the guy sucked and I think quite a few people in that seminar did too.

    ok, simplest responsed first

CSN, on his website he listed his ranks, the highest was 5th.
And he was counting them all towards the 12th.

I just figured he was really a gaming geek and was thinking
(like in D&D) that his character level was equal to all his
    combined class levels.

r5a, what I said what that challenging someone to a fight could
be construed as assault. Asking is somewhat different than
    a 'challenge'.

A friend of mine kept having a guy come
in to his school and wanting to fight him to see if he was good
enough. So, he had him arrested for assault and trespassing
after the 3rd time he did it in the middle of class.
For a school owner, the liability of beating the crap out of
every jerk who walks in off the street is not worth losing the
school over. I agree with what you said about other ways to
find out if a teacher is good. But, what's the point of challenging
someone anyway? You obviously think they might suck anyway
or you wouldn't be trying to take them down a notch or whatever.

Sevenstar, don't you think that any school owner is going to take
that as a challenge? Especially, no matter how you phrase it,
that's really what you mean. I've been searching for some
people to spar with who wouldn't get a huge attitude about it all.
Meaning that they are good enough not to have an ego about
their abiliities. (I think I may have found some people, too.) I've
looked at other schools in the area and none of them struck me
in a way that made me feel like I could walk in and ask to spar
with their high level people WITHOUT them getting attitudes
about it. So, I didn't bother asking till I met someone who made
a good impression on me with their personality and presence.

SO, I feel that if you are talking about challenging a school owner
you have already made up your mind about their ability and so
it's pointless to embarass them. AGAIN, this is talking about
"Challenging" someone. Meeting someone and building a report
with them and then exchanging hands is different.

    joedoe

I knew you were going to say that.

usually, yes. It's all to easy to do though. Especially when
people set themselves up to be ridiculed. But, I'm trying to
keep my mind on this quote if I find myself falling into it.

"This sad little lizard told me he was a brontosaurus on his mother's side. I did not laugh, people who boast of ancestry often have little else to sustain them. Humoring them costs nothing and adds to happiness in a world in which happiness is always in short supply. "

but, anyway, there are a lot of funny people out there, whether
they intend to be or not. And it is hard not to make fun of them
and I agree with the pretentiousness of the site in question.

I wasn't trying to blast you for blasting them, just expressing
a change in heart about blasting silly people.

If it wasn't for the mcdojo's how would we feel superior
