AUSTRALIAN Ninja Warrior contestant Sopiea Kong knows a thing or two about pushing past pain to win.
The 29-year-old Queenslander, who will appear on the Channel 9 show on Sunday, once won a bodybuilding competition just three days after lifesaving abdominal surgery.
Australian Ninja Warrior contestant Sopiea Kong.
“In 2014, I had a tumour growing inside me and it ruptured,” she said. “I was in so much pain and I had internal bleeding and lost over four litres of blood, so it was life-threatening.
“Even though it was the worst pain of my life, I never told my parents and I went through it alone because my mum has a weak heart and I didn’t want her to worry.”
The petite stylist, who grew up idolising Bruce Lee, trained in martial arts and taught herself to use nunchucks, said she was used to being *underestimated – and she loved it.
“I have three brothers, so I grew up with boys,” she said.
“I never owned a Barbie or anything. I loved the outdoors and riding motorbikes.”
She said the show, which pits contestants against each other in a battle to defeat an extremely difficult obstacle course, was the closest she could get to her lifelong dream of being a ninja.
“It’s not all about strength – it’s also about being smart and tactical and that’s what I know,” she said.

For the uninitiated, a nunchaku is a Japanese Okinawan martial arts weapon. It is made of two wooden sticks connected to each other with an iron chain. The legendary Bruce Lee was an expert in this art form.
