    That is very sad...

Fake cop arrested for robberies, extortions
indianexpress Express News Service , The New Indian Express

HYDERABAD: A BSc graduate and black belt holder in Shaolin Kung Fu was arrested on Friday for committing robberies in the guise of a policeman.

The accused, A Srujan Kumar alias Surya, hails from Warangal and is residing at Borabanda now.

According to Task Force DCP Ch Ramchander, Surya worked as a bodyguard to a director of a reputed software company at Madhapur here with the experience of possessing a black belt in martial arts. While working in the company, he trapped a minor girl and eloped with her to Vijayawada and married her.

A kidnap case was registered and he was sentenced to five years in jail.

Srujan Kumar, however, challenged the verdict in a higher court and secured bail.

In prison he came in contact with an offender, S Vijay, and, on release, the duo, posing as policemen, committed six robberies in the areas of Saroornagar, Ramgopalpet, Madhapur, Asifnagar and Kukatpally. He had been arrested earlier by the Asifnagar police in an Arms Act case.

As he jumped bail, non-bailable warrants were issued against him and he has been evading arrest for the past two years. “After lying low for some time, Srujan Kumar started committing robberies again in the recent past. He committed five robberies or extortions at Rajendranagar and Nallakunta posing as a policeman,” Ramchander said.

Srujan Kumar's main targets were couples visiting parks or triple-riding bikers.

“He approaches them by posing himself as a policeman and robs them or extorts valuables from them. The victims part with gold or cash in return for being not booked,” the DCP said.

Srujan Kumar was nabbed near Amba Theatre at Mehdipatnam and was handed over to the Asifnagar police for further action. A sword, a motorcycle and a mobile phone were seized

Would-be 7-Eleven robber gets naked in Sparta cell, police say
    12:02 AM, Dec. 14, 2011 |

SPARTA — A Sparta man free on $50,000 bail after being charged with a violent assault in Pennsylvania allegedly tried to rob a convenience store here and then performed martial arts moves while naked in a holding cell, police said.

Officers were dispatched at 5:20 a.m. Sunday to the 7-Eleven on Pine Cone Lane after the clerk reported a man threatened him with a knife, Sgt. John-Paul Beebe, a department spokesman, said.

The clerk said the man aimlessly walked around the store and then approached the counter and displayed a knife with a 7-inch blade and yelled at the clerk, asking him if he was scared, Beebe said.

When another patron entered the store, the man fled on foot, Beebe said.

After obtaining a description, officers began to canvass the area. A short time later, Sgt. Jeffrey Mase was checking businesses in the Theater Center when he heard a man yelling expletives in a threatening tone at him.

It was still dark out so the sergeant could not see the suspect, who fled on foot as additional officers arrived, Beebe said.

At 6:28 a.m., Officer C.J. Grauerholz located the suspect walking on Woodport Road near Birch Tree Lane. The man, later identified as Corey Winkler, 21, was taken into custody without incident, Beebe said.

Winkler did not have the knife in his possession, but police recovered a sheath, and they have video surveillance from the store, Beebe said.

At police headquarters, Winkler’s behavior became more and more bizarre, according to Beebe, who said that Winkler took off all his clothes while in the department’s holding cell and began screaming incoherently. He then began simulating shooting a gun and engaging in martial arts stances and kicks, Beebe said.

Winkler has been charged with atempted robbery and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. His bail has been set at $100,000.

On Tuesday, Winkler was under police guard and was assessed by mental health professionals.

Winkler was free on bail after his Nov. 12 arrest by Bloomsburg Pa. police. Winkler was charged with aggravated assault and harassment of 21-year-old Michael Logan Walsh of Milford, Pa. Both men are students at Bloomsburg University.

    Not a Shaolin monk...

...but he plays one on TV
TV actor arrested after 13 years on the run in China

by Xing yu and Zhao Yunpeng

BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- A popular TV actor has been arrested and is in criminal detention for a crime committed 13 years ago.

The Qiqihar City Public Security Bureau in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang received reports that Zhang Guofeng, an actor in Jinhua, Zhejiang province in East China, was suspected of being Ji Siguang, a man wanted for assaulting a police officer in 1998.

After a joint investigation with the police in Jinhua, the Qiqihar police confirmed that Zhang was the man they wanted and on Dec 8, the 39-year-old actor was arrested.

When caught, he was playing the part of a monk in a new TV drama.

According to police, Ji and three accomplices robbed a policeman, Yang Lin, and his wife on Dec 6, 1998, in Qiqihar.

Yang's handgun, cell phone and some cash were stolen, and Yang was seriously injured after being stabbed in the chest and back.

The three other suspects were caught, but Ji escaped.

Questioned by police after being escorted back to Qiqihar, Ji explained he fled to Jinhua and assumed the identity of Zhang Guofeng, in which guise he began working as an extra at Zhejiang Hengdian World Studios.

He later got opportunities to play supporting roles and acted in some popular TV shows, such as Undercover, in which he played a role alongside some of the most famous actors and actresses in China.

Ji had supporting roles in more than 30 TV dramas, but he confessed he never watched them, as, even after 13 years on the run, he was always scared that the police would be able to identify him.

In a similar case, a man in Liaoning province was charged with a 13-year-old murder in June, when he was recognized as a contestant on a matchmaking program. The police arrested him after the show.

The date of Ji's trial is still to be set, but, if convicted, he could face a long jail sentence.

"Ji's sentence will depend on what part he played in the robbery," said Hong Daode, a criminal law professor at China University of Political Science and Law.

"A suspect who is charged with robbery faces three years to ten years in prison. If someone is seriously injured or killed in the robbery, the suspect could receive a life sentence or even the death penalty," said Tang Hongxin, an attorney at Ying Ke Law Firm.
Google flags the article below as 'highly cited'. Of course, that would be the one that runs a stock photo of a Shaolin monk that has little to do with this case.
Chinese fugitive evades police for 13 years – by becoming TV actor

A Chinese fugitive who spent years hiding in plain sight as an actor on popular TV shows has been arrested over the assault of a police officer 13 years ago, state media have reported.

Police seized Ji Siguang as he was filming a costume drama, said officials in Qiqihar, northern Heilongjiang province. His best-known role was in the appropriately named hit spy drama Lurk, three years ago.

Ji, who acted under the name Zhang Guofeng, appeared in more than 30 shows but reportedly told police he had been too frightened to watch his performances because he was nervous he might be recognised.

The 39-year-old's capture in Jinhua, eastern Zhejiang province, appears to have been the result of a tipoff from anonymous informants rather than police scrutiny of primetime TV.

Ji is accused of assaulting a police officer and taking his gun in a 1998 street robbery in Qiqihar. Three others were caught by police within days of the attack.

According to the Guangzhou Daily, Ji confessed to police, saying he had moved from city to city before settling in Zhejiang, where he found work as an extra at Hengdian World Studios, China's biggest film-making base. With previous experience as a radio host, Ji gradually worked up to larger roles and was playing a Buddhist monk in the new series Shaolin Tigers when arrested.

In July, another fugitive was arrested for a 1998 murder after appearing on a dating programme. Officers checked tapes of the show after a viewer told police he recognised music teacher Wu Gang, who had used the alias Liu Hao.

Haltwhistle karate teacher Harry Cook facing jail for abusing pupils Read More http:

    http://www.journallive.co.uk/north-e...#ixzz1jkiStLKi

A RENOWNED martial arts expert from Northumberland will be spending a significant period of time behind bars after admitting sexually abusing young pupils.

Henry Cook, known as Harry, was a hugely respected karate instructor who taught hundreds of children and even wrote books on the sport.

Now he has admitted sexually assaulting five of his young female pupils in a shocking breach of trust. The married father, from Haltwhistle, Northumberland, was also found to have one of the largest child pornography archives ever seized in the North East, with more than 55,000 sick images – including some of the girls he molested.

The 62-year-old, a seventh dan master, has been remanded in custody and is facing a substantial prison term when he is sentenced in March.

He had already admitted 14 charges of indecently assaulting two girls, one in the 1980s and the other more recently, at a previous hearing.

He was brought back to Newcastle Crown Court yesterday to face a further 29 offences and admitted all of them.

The latest charges to which he confessed included 15 indecent or sexual assaults on three girls over an eight-year period.

Cook further admitted 13 counts of making and possessing indecent photographs of children and one of possessing extreme pornography involving animals. He had a total of 55,585 child pornography images. Prosecutor Amanda Rippon told the court: “Some of the images are of the victims of the indecent assaults.”

Cook, formerly of Castle Hill Terrace, Haltwhistle, who has been remanded in custody since early last year, will be brought back to be sentenced on March 5.

Jamie Adams, defending, said: “The court maybe assisted by a psychiatric assessment of the defendant.”

Cook is a well known figure in the martial arts world and although he taught mainly in Hexham and Haltwhistle, he gave lessons all over the world. He founded his own school, the Seijinkai Karatedo Association, to teach his blend of Shotokan and Goju-ryu karate styles. The association now has branches in Ireland, Norway, and the United States of America, as well as the UK.

News of his offending has shocked those who knew him in the karate world.

Cook, originally from South Shields, South Tyneside, is a seventh dan master of two forms of karate, studied at Durham University and after training as a school teacher, devoted his life to the martial art.

Martial arts champion avoids jail after 'legal high' seizure
    Thursday, January 26, 2012 - 07:26 PM

A national martial arts champion who hopes to represent Ireland in the Olympics has avoided jail after being caught with over €22,000 of drugs.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Derek Reid (aged 25) was caught with €17,255 worth of mephedrone, a previously “legal high” that had been sold in head shops up to two months before this offence.

Reid of Slademore Close, Ard Na Greine, Dublin pleaded guilty to possession of the mephedrone and €6,000 worth of cannabis at Oscar Traynor Road on July 20, 2010.

Garda Gerard Nixon told Mr Maurice Coffey BL, prosecuting, that he stopped Reid’s car after he saw him overtaking another car at speed.

He said he then carried out a search of the car because he could smell cannabis herb and he found the drugs in plastic bags in the foot well.

Mr Michael O’Higgins SC, defending, said his client had developed addiction problems with benzodiazapam, cocaine and cannabis but has taken steps to deal with these addictions.

He said Reid had practiced the martial art of Taekwondo up to his early teens but had drifted away from the sport.

He said Reid was now coaching the sport and was a “National Champion” at home and abroad and that, as a member of the Irish National Team he hoped to compete at the Olympics.

A report from the Probation Services said that since this offence Reid had responded in a “positive and satisfactory” way and was addressing his addiction problems.

The court heard that he came from an “impeccably supportive” family and that his father had taken an addiction studies course to try to help his son.

Judge Martin Nolan said Reid had succeeded in reforming himself and suspended a sentence of six years imprisonment for six years.

    Rasul Mirzayev

Dagestani sambo champion charged with killing released on bail
    by at 13/02/2012 19:13

Martial-arts champion Rasul Mirzayev, accused of throwing a fatal punch that killed student Ivan Agafonov, is to be released on bail, Moscow’s Zamoskvoretsky Court ruled on Monday.

The Dagestan-born sambo professional will leave custody as soon as the amount of 100,000 rubles is transferred to the court’s account, Interfax reported.

Mirzayev was previously bailed for 5 million rubles shortly after he was placed in custody, but promptly returned to jail as prosecutors appealed the court decision.

    Charge reduced

An unusual number of police officers were drawn to guard the court’s building this morning, where the case is being heard, Interfax reported. The case has already seen a hundreds-strong protest staged by nationalists groups despite Mirzayev being remanded to jail.

Today’s decision to release Mirzayev on bail was due to a charge reduction. Initially he was accused of killing with intent and faced up to 15 years of jail, which was later reduced to killing by recklessness.

“The grounds for Mirzayev’s further remand in custody are no longer valid,” Judge Yulia Novichkova said.

    Family to appeal

The plaintiffs from Agafonov’s family are not giving up and are going to appeal, their representative said.

“Now everyone can kill for 100,000 rubles,” Oksana Mikhalkina, the family’s lawyer said.

Agafonov (19) died in a hospital after a fight with Mirzayev outside of a nightclub on Aug. 15, and the sambo champion turned himself in to the police after the fatal scuffle.

Later, a medical probe found out that Agafonov died from hitting his head on the pavement after Mirazayev’s blow.

The student’s family seemed to have become even more upset after Mirzayev submitted his letter of apology in which he didn’t mention Agafonov’s mother, according to the family’s lawyer.

“We believe it to be a sort of an insult,” Mikhalkina told Interfax.

Chef jailed for kung fu attack on customer
    The Star/Asia News Network
    Tuesday, Feb 21, 2012

MALACCA - Using kung fu moves with a pair of chopsticks and a wooden chair, a chef here floored a customer at his restaurant two years ago.

Yesterday, a Sessions Court sentenced Abdul Rahman Teoh Abdullah, 47, to five years in jail for injuring P.M. Balakrishnan, 57.

The offence was committed at a restaurant in Jalan Melaka Raya 11 in Taman Melaka Raya here at about 4am on Jan 1, 2010.

Judge Hamri Thamri Mohammad Shaharuddin meted out the sentence after Abdul Rahman changed his plea to guilty, minutes after he claimed trial when the charge was read out to him yesterday.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Fairuz Syuhada Amran prosecuted while Abdul Rahman was not represented.

Based on the statement of facts, the accused had used kung fu moves, using chopsticks and a wooden chair, to assault Balakrishnan.

Mitigating that he was the sole breadwinner in his family, Abdul Rahman appealed to the court to reduce his sentence.

Fairuz Syuhada objected and asked the court not to be lenient as Abdul Rahman should not have injured his customer under any circumstance.

DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC) -- The search is on for whoever slammed a car into a martial arts studio in Downey on Sunday.

It happened around 1:45 a.m. on Imperial Highway near Lakewood Boulevard.

The impact of that crash left quite a bit of external damage and shattered an entire front window. There doesn't appear to be too much internal damage though, since the studio was pretty much empty.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone ever see The Kung-Fu kids?
Actor Yen Cheng-kuo released on parole after 10 years in jail
    2012/03/12 21:37:06

Taipei, March 12 (CNA) Actor Yen Cheng-kuo, who shot to fame for "The Kung-Fu kids" series but was later thrown into jail for kidnapping and extortion, was released on parole Monday after spending more than 10 years in prison.

"I want to see my mother and son most," Yen, now 37, said as he walked out of the Taichung prison in a red shirt, red trousers and white sneakers at around 5 p.m.

He said that after so many years behind bars, his mind was blank but he also felt a sense of joy and happiness.

Yen said that while he was in jail, he worked in a paper bag processing plant and practiced calligraphy during his spare time to help himself stay calm.

Yen, who was met by a friend, bowed deeply to express appreciation to prison officials before leaving.

Prison officials said that due to his interest in calligraphy, Yen won 47 awards in various calligraphy competitions both inside and outside the prison, and he also took part in street dance competitions.

Yen became the only bread winner in his family when both his parents lost their jobs while he was in elementary school.

He later dropped out of junior high school and became addicted to drugs and committed a series of crimes, including burglary, between 1996 and 1998.

In July 2001, he and several others kidnapped a man and asked for a ransom of NT$2 million.

Changhua prosecutors asked for the death sentence for Yen in accordance with the Robbery Punishment Act, but the act was abolished the following year, and Yen eventually was sentenced to 15 years in jail.

He was eligible for parole due to his good behavior in prison.

Chu Yen-ping, director of "The Kung-Fu Kids" series, said he was glad that Yen was a free man.

"He's a good actor. If there's a suitable role, I would like to give him the chance to play it," Chu said.
