    Ninja slaying

At first, I thought this was an amusing story to post on our Ninjas! thread to plug NinjaStar, but then I realized how messed up it was.
Karate instructor who masterminded 'ninja group' killing of wealthy couple faces death penalty
    By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 2:44 PM on 26th October 2010

Charged: Leonard Patrick Gonzalez Jnr., is charged with masterminding the double killing of Byrd and Melanie Billings as their nine disabled children cowered nearby

A karate instructor is facing the death penalty for masterminding a 'ninja group' double killing of a wealthy couple in July 2009.

Leonard Patrick Gonzalez Jr, 36, is charged with organising the break-in and entry at Byrd and Melanie Billings' house near Pensacola, Florida, and their killing, which was done as the couple's nine young disabled children cowered or slept nearby.

The group, dressed in black ninja outfits, peppered the bedroom with bullets, shooting the couple in the face and head during a botched attempt to steal a cash-filled safe.

Investigators have said Mr Gonzalez required his alleged partners-in-crime to dress in the clothing for the attack.

Six co-defendants at the trial, which begins today, have been charged with first-degree murder.

Several could testify against Mr Gonzalez and name him as the man who fatally shot Mr Billings, who owned a company that financed used-car purchases.

Two of Mr Gonzalez's co-defendants are scheduled to testify against him, prosecutor Bill Eddins revealed.

But none of the young children, who were unharmed in the attack, are expected to testify about what they saw in their home that night, said Mr Eddins.

Mr Gonzalez, a married father of six, is a longtime karate instructor who grew up learning martial arts at a karate studio in nearby Gulf Breeze owned by his stepfather and mother.

He and his wife taught self-defence to women and children and solicited donations from local businesses for their work.

Several potential jurors said yesterday they did not feel comfortable deciding if Mr Gonzalez should live or die.

One man told the court that he felt strongly the death penalty was a waste of taxpayers' money because of the lengthy appeal process.

Mr Gonzalez's defence lawyers have asked Circuit Judge Nicholas Geeker to move the trial out of Pensacola, saying extensive local and national media coverage has tainted the jury pool.

They made reference to national appearances by Ashley Markham, the couple's adult daughter, on the Oprah Winfrey Show and by Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan on CNN and other national television shows.

But Judge Geeker ruled earlier this month that he must first try to seat a jury from the four counties he oversees before he considers relocating the two-week trial.

Among the evidence expected to be presented is surveillance video taken from the home on the night of the killings.

The shadowy, time-lapse video shows armed intruders dressed in black barging into the couple's living room. Melanie Billings is seen protectively grabbing what appears to be a child.

The Billingses were fatally shot in their bedroom, where there were no video cameras.

A safe that was taken from the family's home contained nothing of value, but a second safe that wasn't stolen had $164,000 (£104,000) in cash, court records show.

According to autopsy reports, Melanie Billings, 43, was shot twice in her chest, and in the face and head.

Byrd Billings, 66, was shot multiple times in the head and legs.

The crime scene photos show dozens of bullet holes throughout the living room and bedroom and a trail of blood along the living room floor.

In his initial interview with investigators, Mr Gonzalez suggested a group of car dealers with a grudge against Byrd Billings wanted him killed, or 'whacked'.

He also told investigators that he and one of Byrd Billings's grown sons, Justin, had worked together as 'enforcers' to get payments from people who had fallen behind.

The nine adopted children in the home, all between the ages of four and 11 at the time of break-in, have varying disabilities ranging from Down's syndrome to fetal alcohol syndrome and autism.

The silent surveillance video footage from the children's bedrooms shows two of the children remaining still during the break-in.

A third is in her bedroom alone when the attackers arrive, and their van can be seen through her window.

The girl walks to the window and appears to watch the men enter.

She then gets back in the bed and pulls the covers around her. She gets up a second time before returning to bed and putting her head on the pillow as the tape ends.

Miss Markham told talkshow host Winfrey that she and her husband are raising the children in the home where their parents died

'Ugly Betty' actor charged with sword murder

'Ugly Betty' actor charged with sword murder

New York (CNN) -- A bit actor who appeared on ABC's "Ugly Betty" series has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon after police say they found him wielding a 3-foot sword near the body of his dead mother in their Brooklyn apartment.
Police arrested Michael Brea, 31, on Tuesday after responding to neighbors' complaints of shouting coming from an apartment that he shared with his mother, according to a police spokesman who would not provide his name, citing police policy.
The victim, Yanick Brea, suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a police written statement.
When authorities entered the apartment, in Brooklyn's Prospect Heights neighborhood, they found Michael Brea sitting in a chair with the sword in his hand, the spokesman said.
Neighbors said police arrived at the building quickly, but they questioned how long it took authorities to actually enter the apartment.
Neighbor Gregory Clare, who lives in Brea's apartment building, told CNN affiliate NY1 that "for about 45 minutes, [police] didn't follow through [in entering the apartment]."
"It would've made a big difference," he said. "I think Miss Brea would still be here [had police responded sooner]."
But New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said during a news conference officers were following police procedures.
"When there is a barricade situation, responding patrol officers, if possible, wait for emergency service officers to come," he said.
Police took Michael Brea to King's County Hospital following the incident for psychiatric evaluation, according to the spokesman.

Ly Huong, Vietnamese martial arts star, convicted of parental kidnapping
    BY John Marzulli
    DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
    Thursday, December 16th 2010, 3:22 PM

Vietnamese movie actress Ly Huong, with her attorney Edward Kratt, outside Federal Court in Brooklyn after being found guilty by a jury of parental kidnapping.

A Vietnamese martial arts movie star who complained she was sick of living in a Chinatown "rat hole" was convicted Thursday of parental kidnapping - a verdict that disturbed the judge.

The jury rejected Ly Huong's testimony that she fled to Hanoi with her young daughter in 2005 to escape an abusive marriage to her husband, known as the "King of Canal St."

Brooklyn Federal Judge Sterling Johnson said he would reserve judgment on a defense motion to set aside the verdict.

"I have grave reservations about the \[jury's\] decision," Johnson said.

Ly, 43, comes from a well-known entertainment family; her father is also an actor and considered Vietnam's Bruce Lee.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Soumya Dayananda argued that the defendant sought a divorce from husband Tony Lam on Vietnamese home turf "because of her famous name and her famous family."

There is no dispute that Ly's life in New York City was less glamorous than the celebrity status she enjoyed in her homeland.

In New York, she worked in Lam's pizzeria and complained to a relative: "I'm sick of living in a rat hole."

"You can't get out of a marriage because you don't have a stove in your apartment, you are sick of climbing steps and you live on Canal St.," Dayananda told the jury.

"You go down to Family Court -- you don't get on a plane and travel across the world and take your daughter with you," she said.

Defense lawyer Edward Kratt said he would appeal. Ly faces a maximum of three years in prison.

Lam, the owner of Bun restaurant in Soho, denied his ex-wife's allegations of philandering and physical abuse. "I am sad because either way my family is broken," he said.
Not to be insensitive, but if her dad is Vietnam's Bruce Lee, is she Vietnam's Shannon?

This is a good one - an Israeli spy!

Details of Egypt spy's movements emerge
Ayman Farouk, Tuesday 21 Dec 2010
Authorities have revealed detailed information about the movements of the alleged Egyptian spy for Israel

Egypt's State Security prosecutor's office announced yesterday charges against an Egyptian man arrested for his alleged role in an Israeli spy ring. At the conference authorities said that the alleged spy, Tariq Abdel Razeq Hassan has been referred to the emergency state security supreme court for trial by the attorney general.

In the official prosecution report, Hassan and his two Israeli accomplices are charged with having been involved in undercover operations for Israel, both in Egypt and abroad, between 2007 and 2010.

The report details three specific charges against Hassan.

The first, is spying for a foreign country with the intention of harming national interests by cooperating with his two co-accused and offering them information on Egyptians working in the communications industry to be recruited to work for the Israeli secret service.

The second charge is for carrying out actions that threaten the political relations between Egypt and Syria by offering information on several Syrian and Lebanese citizens to his Israeli accomplices, also charged in the case.

The final charge is accepting money from agents working on behalf of a foreign country with the intention of harming national interests in return for the amount of $37,000.

The indicted Israelis, Idid Moushay and Joseph Daymour, are charged with conspiring with Hassan to commit the crimes with which he has been charged. With their financial assistance he was able to travel to India, Thailand, Syria, Nepal and Laos. They also provided him with an encrypted computer on which to save data and communicate with them.

Moushay and Daymour are also charged with providing Hassan with a stated amount of money to harm national interests.

The Attorney General, Hisham Badawi, referred the three accused to the emergency state security court. Hassan remains detained -- his two accomplices are at large.

In the course of their investigations, Egyptian authorities have been able to ascertain a chain of events from Hassan's first contact with Israeli intelligence up until his arrest in August this year. In the prosecution report obtained by Ahram Online, the sequence of events is documented as follows:

-Hassan initiated contact (with Mossad) while in China by sending the Israeli secret service an email offering his services to them as an Egyptian citizen.

-He travelled to China in 1992, after finishing his technical degree, and studied Kung Fu classes for two years before returning to Egypt. When he returned home he worked as a Kung Fu coach in a sporting club but financial trouble meant he left again for China in 2007 to find work. When no work materialized, he contacted Mossad in May of the same year.

-In August 2007, Hassan received a phone call from Joseph Daymour who approached him as a Mossad spokesperson and asked him to meet in Thailand. When Hassan could not obtain a visa for Thailand Daymour told him to go to Nepal instead. After waiting for fifteen days he was summoned to India by Daymour.

-In September 2007, Hassan went to India where he received an email from Daymour instructing him to go to the Israeli embassy. There Hassan met Daymour who quizzed him on his past before giving him a sum of $1800 as compensation for expenses he had incurred.

-The two men next met in January at the Israeli embassy in Thailand where Hassan underwent a lie detector test. At the end of this trip he received another $1400, again to cover his travelling expenses. When Daymour later told Hassan he had passed the test he rewarded him with $1000. Later that day, Hassan accompanied Daymour to a restaurant where he was introduced to Idi Moushay who would be his trainer.

-Hassan was trained in how to contact certain people and was given a secret email through which they could stay in touch. He was then sent back to China and instructed to set up an import and export company, a cover for his intelligence gathering work. Hassan was given $5000 to set up the company with the promise of an $800 monthly salary as well as bonuses and travel costs.

-During a visit to Thailand in May 2008, Moushay gave him the address and password for a website advertising job vacancies that was used by Mossad to identify potential recruits in Syria. From among applicants for jobs in industries such as olive oil and confectionary, Hassan was charged with compiling background reports on them for Moushay to identify those worth approaching.

-Hassan travelled to Syria under the name Taher Hassan and met the candidates Moushay had selected. While there he also reported back on Syrian security measures. For this he received a sum of $2500.

-In August, Hassan went to Thailand and met Moushay who introduced him to a Mossad officer who gave his name as Abu Shady. Hassan was instructed to meet with another Mossad agent in Syria and give him a sum of $2500 in addition to $500 worth of presents. Upon completing of this assignment Hassan was paid $3100.

-In February 2009 he travelled to Laos where Moushay gave him an encrypted laptop for him to safely store data.

-In March of this year Hassan travelled to Macau, in China, where Moushay instructed him to find employees in Egyptian communication firms and who could act as potential recruits for the Israeli secret services. Accordingly, they set up a website under the name Hoshtek with a Hong Kong identified ISP address advertising vacancies in the field of communication in Egypt. As with the Syrian operation, Hassan reported to Moushay on the backgrounds of applicants.

-Hassan said he received $37,000 in total for his work for Mossad.

Hassan's family has denied having any knowledge of his activities. His mother telling has said she was shocked when she learned the news of his arrest. She described her son as an "introvert without any friends". As far as she knows, her son travelled to China where he learned Kung Fu -- while there she says his family sent him money to continue his education. She added that he returned four years later to work as a Kung Fu trainer at a private sporting club after which he travelled back to China. She said she had not heard from him since he returned to China.
I don't know how many martial arts poseurs have handed me a line about being some sort of spy. "Oh, you won't find any record, 'cuz it was top secret." It is somewhat reaffirming to hear of a real one.

    Gosh,

    Frank DeMaria!?!

I guess that's gonna decrease the market value of his Chang Tai Chi book?

EDIT: I had to come back to this post because something does not seem right about this situation. Wasn't this guy a cop? And why, at this juncture, should such behavior surface when it could have surfaced so long ago? I am going to be watching this one. It does not feel right to me.

The one thing you learn in life is you never really know things. If it is true, wow, what a shock. Of course, if it turns out not to be, WOW, world is a messed up place.

ON a related note, nowadays when I see something about someone I know it is always some sort of terrible news, got in trouble OR DIED
