Bay Area native Brenda Hatley recently captured a gold medal in Women’s Hand Forms and qualified for the 2011 Wushu World Games coming to Ankara, Turkey October 6-15, 2011. Wushu is a Chinese martial art that emphasizes athleticism, aesthetics and discipline.

Hatley is enrolled at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM) in San Francisco and is also a student at Pacific Wushu, where she trains under celebrated Wushu masters Zhang Hong Mei and Phillip Wong. She says she is proud and honored to represent the United States in Turkey this fall.

Inspired by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hatley took up martial arts at age 11. She has studied many styles, including Kajukenbo Karate and Shaolin Kung Fu. Today, her main focus of study and competition is modern Wushu.

Hatley's competition specialties are Changquan (Long Fist), Jianshu (Straight Sword) and Qiangshu (Spear). She is also proficient in Eagle Claw, Taijiquan, and in the use of several weapons such as staff and broadsword.

“I like the physicality of the art, and how it looks,” said Hatley. “To excel takes many years of hard work, so for me it is more than a sport—it is a way of life. It’s about discipline. You train hard, get injured, and show respect for teachers at all times.”

Literally translated, "Wu" means military and "Shu" is art. Therefore, Wushu is the “art of fighting” or “martial arts.” During the last thirty years, Wushu in Mainland China has become standardized for training and competing, with emphasis placed on speed, difficulty and presentation. As a result, modern Wushu is a competitive athletic and aesthetic performance sport, while Kung Fu—or traditional Wushu—is the time-honored combat practice.

Although most of the best Wushu athletes in the world are located in China, Wushu is gaining global popularity. It is a prospective sport for the 2013 Olympics.

Martial arts set Hatley on a path of lifelong education and discipline. After breaking her knee during a Wushu competition at CMAT (Chinese Martial Arts Tournament) in 2004, Hatley was forced to take a medical leave from San Francisco State University. After undergoing ACL reconstruction surgery at John Muir Hospital, she moved to Beijing to study Mandarin at Peking University.

After returning to the Bay Area, Hatley graduated Magna Cum Laude in Chinese language from San Francisco State University, with Phi Sigma Iota and Phi Beta Kappa honors. This December she will graduate from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine with her master's degree.

Hatley has twice lived and trained at Shi Cha Hai Sports School in Beijing—home of the renowned Beijing Wushu team, and the training school of Jet Li and her current teacher, Zhang Hong Mei. Zhang was a national champion in China for Wushu, Bagua, Tai Chi, straight sword and double straight sword; she has even performed for a US president.

Although her academic career has been very demanding, Hatley still trains up to six days a week. When she is not training, she enjoys time with friends, movies and knitting—and can often be found in a San Francisco cafe enjoying a good book.

In addition to all of the work Hatley is investing into school and Wushu, she is also responsible for raising all of the money needed to compete in the 2011 World Games.

“Although we are on the US Wushu Team, we have no sponsorships, so we have to raise money for our expenses ourselves. Since most of us our young, we tend to have more college debt than income at this stage of our lives.”

Fighters Off To World Championships

Talia Iris, Garon Wilkinson, Jermal Woolridge and Sentwali Woolridge will be representing Bermuda at the 11th World Wushu Championships being held in Ankara, Turkey from October 6th-15th.

Iris and both Woolridge fighters will be competing in San Shou and Wilkinson will be representing Bermuda for the first time in a world championship in Taolu (forms).

All four athletes have had an impressive year of performances with Iris landing a convincing win over Verity Yata in Rumble on the Rock 2 held on August 27th at the Tennis Stadium.

Sentwali Woolridge was the headliner fight for that night and lost a narrow split decision to Theo Tor in very technical 3-round match. Back in July, he also made his day view in Muay Thai at Friday Night Fights NYC where he fought with no protection for the first time.

Jermal Woolridge is fresh from 3 weeks of training at Extreme Couture Gym in Ontario where he trained with some of the top MMA coaches in Canada. In April, he headlined Fight Night XIII where he finished his opponent Canadian opponent Jeremy Hawkrigg in the 3rd round.

Wilkinson is coming off Grand Championship wins in forms and weapons at the Leperq Memorial held in June and a Grand Championship in weapons at the Bermuda Open held in April.

This is the 3rd World Wushu Championshipn that Bermuda has competed in. This event is held every 2 years and the Bermuda team debuted in 2007 in Beijing and then competed in 2009 in Toronto. This is a smaller team than 2 years ago in Toronto however this is one of the strongest teams that Bermuda has had. All of the athletes have well over 10 years of martial arts experience and 5 years of fighting in full contact. They have all established themselves as top contenders and are hoping that their experience will now start to pay dividends.

Iris will be competing in the 56kg Female San Shou, Sentwali Woolridge be competing in 70kg, Jermal Woolridge will be competing in the +90kg and Wilkinson will be competing in Chang quan (long fist).

The team will be accompanied by manager, Dueane Dill. Wilkinson will also be taking on the role as head coach and will be cornering the fighters along with Dill. Sentwali Woolridge is team captain and will be the flag bearer at the prestigious opening ceremonies.

This event is sanctioned by the International Wushu Federation which has over 120 member countries. Ninety plus countries are expected to compete at this event. San shou is typically dominated by Russia, China, Iran, and Egypt while taolu is typically dominated by Asian nations such as China, Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia. The San Shou adopts the knock-out system with the hope of fighters advancing to the finals. In order to win a medal, fighters will typically have to win 5 fights over 5 days.

Famous Chinese actor Jet Li to come to Turkey



Abdurrahman Akyuz, chairman of Turkish Federation of Wushu, said Thursday that they were proud of hosting Jet Li in Ankara.

Chinese martial artist, actor, film producer and wushu champion Jet Li will come to Turkey.

He will be the guest of honor at the 11th World Wushu Championships in Turkish capital.

Jet Li, who clinched the title of world champion for six times, attends wushu championships each year.

Abdurrahman Akyuz, chairman of Turkish Federation of Wushu, said Thursday that they were proud of hosting Jet Li in Ankara.

The 11th World Wushu Championships will be held at Ankara Arena on October 6 and 15 with the participation of nearly a thousand sportsmen from more than 70 countries.

Good of him to appear. That should attract some reporters.

11th World Wushu Competition opens in Turkish capital Ankara

ANKARA, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- The 11th World Wushu Competition (WWC) has opened in Turkish capital city Ankara on Sunday evening in the wake of a grand ceremony.

Chairman of the International Wushu Federation (IWF) Yu Zaiqing thanked the Turkish Wushu Federation for all their work done and will continue to do for the promotion of Wushu and its values in Turkey, Europe and across the world.

He noted that, for athletes, "the most important thing is to practice Wushu in a spirit of fair play, respect, tolerance and without doping" .

While conveying Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan' s greetings to this event, Turkish Minister of Youth & Sport Suat Kilic vowed that he will spare no effort in promoting Wushu in Turkey in his term.

About 700 athletes from over 83 countries and regions will compete in the week-long event, said a statement posted on the Turkish Wushu Association website.

The 11th World Wushu Competition (WWC) is going to be launched in Turkish capital city Ankara on Sunday evening, according to Turkish Wushu Association.

About 700 athletes from over 83 countries and regions will attend the week-long event, said a statement posted on the Turkish Wushu Association website.

China, as the birthplace of Wushu or Martial arts, has sent a delegation with 20 athletes to attend the competition, said Zhang Genxue, Chief coach for China's Free Fighting team.

Chairman of the International Wushu Federation (IWF) Yu Zaiqing will also be present at the 11th WWC, according to the head of Turkish Wushu Association Abdurrahman Akyuz.

Akyuz noted that although Wushu was originated from China, it belongs to the world and there is a growing enthusiasm for Turkish people to exercise Wushu.

China's Li wins women's Taijiquan gold medal in 11th WWC

China's Li Xinyu won the first place in the women's Taijiquan competition in the 11th World Wushu Championships (WWC) held in Turkish capital Ankara, the WWC organizing committee announced on Monday.

Li recorded the highest mark of 9.85 points among 16 competitors, while Indonesian athlete Guo Lijuan got the second place with 9.75 points and the Japanese competitor Ai Mayaoka shared the third place with Malaysian competitor Chai Fongying with 9.71 points.

The full mark for Taijiquan competition is 10.

"I prepared a lot for this competition and experienced tough practices before I came here. And that is why I am rather confident in the competition," Li told Xinhua after the competition.

"To play Taijiquan well is quite difficult," said Liu Baoyu, a coach from Chinese Wushu team. "However, Li performed quite excellent thanks to her confidence during the performance."

Li, the girl in her 20's, said that she started to practice Taijiquan when she was ten years old.

She said she hoped to make progress with worldwide Taiji players.

Also on Monday afternoon, Turkish Elif Akyuz won the gold medal of women's Qiangshu, or spearplay, competition, while Japanese Daisuke Ichiki shared the No. 1 place with Malaysian competitor Ng Say Yoke in men's Gunshu, or men's cudgel play.

Reports are disappointing. The official site is messy about results and behind. There's a facebook site that's a little more up-to-date, but it's pretty disorganized too. I've been getting more from my facebook friends who are there.

ANKARA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Huang Guangyuan won the first place in men's Nanquan competition in the 11th World Wushu Championships (WWC) held in Turkish capital Ankara, the WWC organizing committee announced on Tuesday.

Huang recorded the highest mark of 9.79 points among more than 50 competitors, while Chinese Hongkong athlete He Jingde got the second place with 9.71 points and the Korean competitor Lee Seung-kuen got the third place with 9.67 points.

The full mark for Nanquan competition is 10.

"I am kind of harassed by jet lag, but I overcame it under the help of my coach," Huang told Xinhua after the competition.

"Nanquan requires strong explosive force and Huang managed it well through hard practices," said Liu Baoyu, a coach from Chinese Wushu team.

The 22-year-old Huang said that he started to practise Nanquan when he was 12 years old.

Concerning his competitors in the WWC, Huang said they are making rapid progress these years.

ANKARA, Oct. 11 -- China's Cheng Cheng won the first place in women's competition of Daoshu, a martial art of sword play, at the 11th World Wushu Championships (WWC) in Turkish capital Ankara on Tuesday, according to the WWC organizing committee.

Cheng recorded the highest mark of 9.79 points among dozens of competitors, while Che Xiaoling of Hong Kong, China, got the second place with 9.75 points and the Russian competitor Tarasova Daria was the third on 9.64.

"I am very attracted by sword playing from my childhood and practiced a lot. That's why I can play with high proficiency," the 23-year-old Cheng, who has practised Daoshu for 12 years, told Xinhua after the competition.

Elif Akyuz of Turkey becomes world Wushu champion



Elif Akyuz of Turkey became the world champion in the 11st World Wushu Championships on Monday.

Ankara Sports Hall is currently hosting the championships.

Akyuz became the world champion in women's Qiangshu style scoring 9.60 which is a first for Turkey.

Akyuz defeated 31 opponents from Europe, Asia and America, and won gold medal.

Turkish Officials Pledge Support for Quake-Stricken Region

As residents in Turkey’s eastern city of Van scramble to pull survivors from the wreckage of the country’s most lethal earthquake for over a decade, Ankara on Monday pledged to support the region’s businesses, offering a raft of incentives to help afflicted firms get back on their feet.

Amidst a backdrop of uncertainty, with the death toll rising steadily through the day to hit 279 as evening fell, cabinet ministers from the ruling AK Party took to the airwaves to unveil various of financial aid.

The government’s most senior economics policy maker, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan, told the semi-official Anatolian News Agency that small and medium-sized businesses across Van province would be offered special support loans from state-run lenders Halkbank and Ziraat Bank. Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek, a native of neighboring Batman province, pledged that affected businesses would be offered one year’s tax exemption. Not to be outdone, Labor and Social Security minister Farut Celik announced an immediate one-year freeze in earthquake-struck business’s obligation to pay social security contributions for employees.

Energy Minister Taner Yildiz pledged to send 2,000 tons of coal a day to the region and Transport Minister Binali Yildirim said the state postal service would not charge for any aid packages sent to Van Governorate.

Deputy Prime Minister Babacan said the government was doing all in its power to “wrap the wounds” caused by the earthquake. “Our banks will give all support to our citizens who have suffered from the earthquake,” he said.

The announcements came after Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan rushed on Sunday night to visit Van, the largest affected city just 10 miles from the epicenter of the 7.2-magnitude quake. The government’s rapid response to the disaster in the mainly ethnic-Kurdish region underscored the seriousness of the quake, and also the political important of handling the disaster effectively.

The militant Kurdistan Worker’s Party, or PKK, is active in the region where the quake struck, and has many supporters there. Mr. Erdogan’s ruling AK Party is working hard to win backing from Kurdish citizens for his effort to crush or marginalize the PKK.

Political analysts said the government appeared to be executing its economic response effectively, but cautioned that handouts to those affected dodged the more pressing question of building safety codes across the country’s largest cities.

“The government is offering the standard response pretty effectively, but none of this answers the essential question of building safety codes in Turkey – especially the ones built by government or state tenders – which are usually the first ones to collapse,” said Atilla Yesida, an analyst with Istanbul-based research consultancy Global Source Partners.

“Nothing has been done to inspect the buildings – nor to come up with coherent earthquake emergency plans. We simply never learn – this is a never-ending tragedy,” he said.

Analysts also stressed that economic aid is particularly vital in Turkey’s predominantly Kurdish south east, which is much poorer than the capital, Ankara, or the booming business hub, Istanbul. Despite Turkey’s economy expanding more than 9% last year, official data from the national statistics authority showed that unemployment in Van in 2010 was 17.2%, sharply higher than the national average of 11.9%. Local administrators across Turkey’s South East say unemployment levels are sharply higher than government estimates.

Aggravating the region’s economic malaise, investors have also been spooked by the recent resurgence in violence between the PKK and the Turkish military, while cross-border trade with Syria, worth over $1.5 billion last year is plunging as Damascus struggles to contain opposition protests.

Outlining incentives for businesses is only one part of a broad earthquake relief effort. Over 3,000 rapid-response search and rescue personnel and over 700 health workers have arrived in the region, along with tents, food and heavy machinery to clear debris and help find survivors.

Van suffered a large earthquake in 1976, when more than 5,000 people died. Turkey’s most recent catastrophic earthquake was in 1999, around 60 miles east of Istanbul, when at least 17,000 people were killed. In 1939, 33,000 people were killed in a quake in Erzincan, also in eastern Turkey.
