    Tomahawk in Movies/TV - animated GIF's

I'm such an animated GIF-making geek. Made some of Mel Gibson in The Patriot with the 'Hawk.
Like my other GIF projects of Balisong and Baton in Movies/TV, please leave a comment with other movies or TV with Tomahawk usage.

    Enjoy!

If you're going to call it a tomahawk, that's somewhat limiting.

If you're considering axes, then that opens up a lot. Axes are favorite weapons of triads and tongs. Without even searching, here are some that immediately pop into mind:

Kung Fu Hustle - the axe gang (great dance number)

    Jackie Chan
Project A 2 - no thread here yet. Great fight while handcuffed to a clumsy cop. He poached some of this for a fight in one of the Shanghai flicks, but I can't remember which one.
Drunken Master 2 - good fight against a gang of axemen.

See also this archived ezine article: CHOP! CHOP! - Kung fu's Deadly Fighting Axes by Jason William McNeil

and this thread: CMA and axe fighting

If you were being just tomahawk specific, my bad.

Also, many TNA (Traditional Native American) tomahawks were stone, granite, rawhide bound weapons used in a club-like fashion and great for throwing with knock down power. https://www.google.com/search?q=ston...&bih=807&dpr=1

Or the fourth member? The Cleaver?

NOTE: Stickgrappler, please keep a glass jar available for the following because there are a lot of hacking weapons and I do not want you to wet yourself:

Cool, thanks for the info Palm Striker! LOL - we have CMA, TMA, and now TNA!

    -------

Oh mickey, you so fine, you so fine, you blow my mind! (old reference may or may not be over your head - couldn't resist - sorry!)

I knew about Last of the Mohicans but neglected to post it. Gangs of New York is not quite Tomahawk, but yeah, Bill's cleaver and knife is awesome! Probably will make GIF's from that movie soon.

Whoa! Hatchet is over-top-gory! I may not make GIFs from that lol

    Thank you!

    -------

    Ching sifu:

Thx for the reminders on Hong Kong movies, initially i was thinking of only Hollywood.

Hatchet is close, not quite Tomahawk, need to rewatch Kung Fu Hustle. Thx. Man forgot all about Project A 2 - felt it wasn't as good as 1 - will rewatch, as well as Drunken Master 2.

Thx also for the links to the articles!

    Thank you everyone!

What about tomahawk pipes? There are an astounding number of those available on the market, but I cannot remember ever seeing one used on film.

If they are using them in a martial way, sure! Just not the 'we smoke'em peace pipe' usage ;-)

    Chin venerated sirs,

Pipes were used in ceremony. Depending on different regions there are different styles of pipe made from different material (clay, wood). A lot of times the pipe is carved to be an effigy- for instance someone from the bear clan will have used a "bear" pipe. Again, pipes were for ceremony both personally and as a social function within the community.

Tomahawks, although most obviously a weapon, can also be used for ceremony too- I could go into more detail but I won't (the old ways are a completely different cultural worldview.) In the present day tomahawks are most commonly used in the latter context, for instance as part of someone's regalia at gatherings (Powwows.) It's my understanding that in older times the tomahawk dually signified both weapon and ceremonial meanings (there would have been over-lapping themes), for instance not just anyone would have his tomahawk decorated a certain way if you know what I mean (gotta earn those stripes.) For instance earning an eagle feather is a high honor.
I have only seen notable community leaders in some way use tomahawks in their regalia/ symbolism.

I have seen the "tomahawk/pipe-in-one" but am unsure of it's exact significance, if any, it could be a modern concept but I could be wrong. Also the herbs smoked out of a pipe was usually a mixture of tobacco, dried sage, sweet-grass, etc, that is one of the reasons why there was a much lower health risk to smoking back then, not how people do it these days.

    Anywhooz, "the more you know..."
    PS- Boycott Columbus Day.

Pipe tomahawks were not created until the Europeans arrived. At some point Europeans traded iron and brass tomahawks/axes with Native Americans. Some were made with a pipe bowel to signify war and peace and were mainly used for ceremonial purposes and/or given away as gifts to various leaders and special guests.

In case anybody is interested, here's how the traditional Choctaw axe was made before they started trading for iron...

    http://www.choctawschool.com/home-si...aded-axes.aspx

Traditional Choctaw pipes were usually made from fired clay. Below is a link to where you can see an image of the pipe bowel. They would attach the pipe bowel to river cane stems. When the pipe got dirty they would clean the pipe bowel out, throw away the cane stem and replace it with a new clean one. They used river cane for all kinds of stuff including making cool ass blowguns...last link below.
