This confirms what several others, including myself, have been told about the meaning of the designation. I know of two cases in which teachers of a named style have reverted to the generic "Fut Ga" rather than continue the name that their teachers used. It seems to be useful when someone either wants to disassociate from a particular lineage or has changed the curriculum to the point that their art is a significantly different system.
Naming a system was less important in previous centuries and generic terms were common. Terms such as "red fist" and "long boxing" were all that was needed. I think it eventually became common for "Buddhist Boxing" systems to take on new names in honor of the teachers or elements of the mythology. "Fut Ga" often became "Siu Lam," "Choy Lee Fut," etc.,.
