None of this has been about assault, though. A fight, planned and agreed upon by both parties in advance, is a bit of a different animal.

Assault is wrong, end of story. But if two people want to meet up and duke it out and they're both fine with this, no matter how stupid their reasons, that's ultimately their business, totally regardless of what happens to be between their legs (provided they don't cause harm to anyone else, of course).

Why would he try a submission from the mount? He did exactly what he should have done in that situation. Stabilized his position, defended an eye gouge attempt, and controlled Springer until he decided to let him up. The only things he might have done differently would to have not let him up and rained down some elbows into his face until he was out or turned over to give up the RNC.
