Physicians aren't required unless it's full contact...

...and there are ways to get around that too. Most martial arts events only contract an EMT or Paramedic to be on site.

But back to Lenix, the alleged shooter has been caught.

    Alleged Starlight drive-in shooter caught
    By Alexis Stevens
    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

With the alleged shooter in custody, friends of the man shot to death at the Starlight Six Drive-In were still struggling to make sense of the tragedy. And one lingering question remained unanswered.

    Why?

“The only person that can answer that question can’t answer that question," Valerie Hammond with the Georgia Renaissance Festival told the AJC.

That person is 28-year-old Mitt Lenix, a martial arts expert and entertainer who died early Tuesday after being shot at the historic Moreland Avenue drive-in DeKalb County. For nearly two days, his alleged killer eluded capture before deputies zeroed in on him Wednesday afternoon.

The arrest comforted the Lenix family.

"It was a feeling of elation, a feeling of release," Mitt's father, William Lenix, told Channel 2 Action News.

After attempting to jump out of a third-story window, Quentric Shaymon Williams, 32, was arrested at the Sun Suites hotel at Steve Reynolds Boulevard and Club Drive near Duluth, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office.

Williams, of Snellville, allegedly shot Lenix and left the drive-in.

"He did try to jump out of a third-floor window, but our deputies were able to grab him and keep him from escaping," said Sgt. Adrion Bell with the DeKalb Sheriff's Office. "And at that point, there was no further resistance."

Lenix was known by many for jumps of his own, according to friends. He holds a world record for jumping 9 feet 4 inches in the air and kicking and breaking a board, according to his biography on the website for his family's martial arts school.

Several years ago, Lenix turned his martial arts expertise into entertainment, partnering with friend Judah Andrews to create a popular act for the Georgia Renaissance Festival, according to Hammond, the festival's entertainment director.

But beyond his athletic skill, Lenix was known for his friendly personality and extreme dedication, Hammond said. Last season, even a knee brace from an injury sustained on stage couldn't keep Lenix from performing, she said.

"It's just so senseless," Hammond said. "He was the kindest, most dynamic person I have ever met."

Lenix, who friends said was on a date Monday night at the drive-in, couldn't get his Ford Escape to start and approached Williams for help, police said.

But Williams allegedly shot Lenix in the chest, got into his truck and left the drive-in, leaving Lenix lying on the ground, according to the incident report obtained by the AJC.

"We don't know a motive yet," Bell said.

As one witness tried to administer aid to Lenix, another followed Williams' Ford F150 until officers arrived, according to police. The chase ended when Williams crashed his truck near the Gwinnett-DeKalb county line and ran.

A female passenger in the truck was taken into custody and then released without being charged. Williams eluded capture until Wednesday afternoon.

Lenix, also a student at Georgia State University, died after being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Adding to the tragic string of events, while heading to assist fellow officers chasing Williams, DeKalb police Officer Jason Cooper struck and killed a pedestrian on Memorial Drive. Clinton Hightower, 27, who police said was not in the crosswalk when he was hit, died at the scene.

Wednesday afternoon, investigators found a weapon in Williams' third-floor hotel room, but it was not immediately known if it was used in the alleged killing, Bell said.

Williams, whose criminal history includes two previous stays in state prison following drug convictions, was shirtless as he was put into a patrol car in the hotel parking lot. He was booked into the DeKalb County jail Wednesday evening and charged with homicide.

Meanwhile, fans of the drive-in that opened in 1949 vowed to continuing their traditions of seeing movies under the stars. Suellen Germani told the AJC her group, called the Drive Invaders, would take their usual front-row seats to watch "Dark Shadows" Wednesday night.

Drive-in leaders created a memorial fund to benefit the Lenix family and promote martial arts education. Those wanting to donate to the fund can visit http://www.gofundme.com/Mitt-Lenix-Fund.

Lenix's funeral will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church in McDonough, Channel 2 reported.

When it's your time it's your time... I can only find comfort in that traditional teaching East and West says there is more than this world. What comes around goes around and we'll be treated as we treat others. We are all eventually going to find out at any rate!

Most martial arts students know and should certainly be told by their instructors repeatedly that despite the best precautions if you want to learn real kung fu unpredictable stuff happens and sooner or later they will get hurt. A good student takes injury as a lesson and will do their ****edest not to do the same thing again.

Whether it is deliberate or an accident does not matter. I personally know of 2 deaths that can be attributed to a martial art, and I know of at least 3 others that were also due to a martial art. CMA to be exact.
I would also suggest that if you can injure or otherwise hurt yourself with your own weapon, you need to get shed of it and find some other form of defense. Even if it is just for show, compitition, or whatever, it is still not something you need to be doing if it can hurt you. Any system that can injure you just as well as it can an opponent is not a system I would consider.

    practice or training injuries abound

we suffer more accidents in training

    then in actual sparring

safety first safety second and safety last

    RIP Deng Qi

I've trained at the Xiaolong school, the year my Master Shi Decheng was away.

Young girl sent to kung fu school to lose weight drops dead 48 hours later
Deng Qi's father believes she was bullied to death - something the famous Shaolin Xiaolong Kung Fu School strenuously denies
    By John Feng Amber Hicks
    13:27, 15 APR 2019

A young girl sent to a kung fu school to lose weight dropped dead less than 48 hours after arriving.

Six-year-old Deng Qi's dad waved goodbye to his "happy" daughter as she embarked on her first day at the school.

But less than two days later he received a call saying she had collapsed and been pronounced dead after failing to respond to treatment.

The youngster's family allege she was bullied to death at the famous Shaolin Xiaolong Kung Fu School, which she enrolled at on April 7.

Her father said she had been "healthy and happy" when he dropped her off on her first day.

"The next we saw our daughter was at 7 or 8pm [on 9th April] in the mortuary," he sobbed.

Deng Qi before enrolling at the school (Image: AsiaWire)

He added: "Her face was purple and there was bruising on her stomach from having been kicked."

CCTV footage he obtained from the school allegedly shows Deng Qi being surrounded by several uniformed pupils, who her father claims punched and kicked her.

He said: "The camera was very far away from our daughter, but it looks like someone pushes her over and then kicks and punches her."

The video shows several of the pupils later carrying Deng Qi down a grandstand to the school nurse.

The martial arts school has strongly denied the allegations of bullying leading to Deng Qi's death.

They have confirmed that the Dengfeng Public Security Bureau is currently investigating the case but released their own statement, threatening media outlets running the Deng family's opinions on the pupils tragic death.

The statement - issued by their director, surnamed Chen, on 14th April - claims Deng Qi "collapsed while playing", calling all other theories "libellous rumours".

It revealed that the schoolgirl was sent to the kung fu school for exercise because she weighed over 50 kilogrammes (110 lb / 7st 8 ) and had trouble walking as a result.

The school said there was "no evidence" to suggest Deng Qi had been beaten to death, and that she had not had any physical altercations with any of her classmates.

The institution added finally that it "reserved the right to take legal action" against media outlets which suggest otherwise and continue to cause "great loss to the school's reputation and income".

The boarding school, which charged her parents 21,000 RMB (£2,390) per year, is located in the county-level city of Dengfeng in Central China's Henan Province.

It is where the original Shaolin Monastery is believed to have been founded in the 5th century AD.

The school is one a commercial offshoots of the Shaolin Temple - itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010 - and the girl's parents sent her there "for some exercise" on the recommendation of a neighbour.

Martial arts school death not suspicious

An investigation team has ruled out beating or other suspicious circumstances as the cause of death for a seven-year-old girl who died at a martial arts school in Dengfeng, Central China's Henan province, two days after she enrolled, CCTV has reported.

The conclusion comes after forensic experts from Dengfeng and Zhengzhou conducted an examination of the girl's remains and public security carried out an investigation at the school.

The girl's parents had no objection to the findings, and the case will not be registered as a criminal case.

The girl's parents sent her to Xiaolong Martial Arts School on Sunday. At 9:40 am on Tuesday she fell to the ground during a class break and died before an ambulance could reach the scene.

According to previous media reports, the girl's father said there were kick marks on her stomach when he saw her remains at the mortuary.

"The surveillance camera was far from my daughter. It seems like someone pushed and kicked her," Deng said after watching a video clip obtained from the school.

Public information shows that Xiaolong Martial Arts School's legal representative is Chen Tongshan, father of actor Shi Xiaolong.

The school has more than 12,000 students and over 2,000 teachers.

    Maxim Dadashev

I thought about posting this under the MMA deaths, but boxing felt more like something that should be posted in Martial Arts Deaths

Boxer Maxim Dadashev, who suffered severe brain injury during Friday fight, has died at 28
    By ANDY CLAYTON
    | NEW YORK DAILY NEWS |
    JUL 23, 2019 | 11:49 AM

Maxim Dadashev receives attention in his corner after his corner threw in the towel following the eleventh round of his junior welterweight IBF World Title Elimination fight against Subriel Matias (not pictured) at The Theater at MGM National Harbor on July 19, 2019 in Oxon Hill, Maryland. (Scott Taetsch/Getty Images)

Russia-born boxer Maxim Dadashev has died from injuries suffered in the ring. He was 28.

His death was first confirmed by his trainer James “Buddy” McGirt and Donatas Janusevicius, Dadashev’s strength and conditioning coach, and later by the Russian Boxing Federation.

“The Russian Boxing Federation expresses deep condolences to Maxim’s relatives and close ones,” the federation said in a statement. “We mourn together with you.”

The rising star — who beat two former world lightweight champions, Darleys Perez and Antonio DeMarco, last year — was promoted by Top Rank Boxing.

“Maxim was a terrific young man,” Top Rank boss Bob Arum said in a statement. “We are all saddened and affected by his untimely death.”

Dadashev, who collapsed after a loss to undefeated Subriel Matias in their junior welterweight (140-pound) bout at the Theater at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland on Friday, underwent surgery early Saturday morning to relieve swelling on his brain.

He was then reportedly placed in a medically induced coma.

Dadashev, originally from St. Petersburg, Russia, who had not lost in 13 previous fights, collapsed in the aisle as he tried to leave the ring under his own power, and vomited, before being placed on a stretcher and rushed to a local hospital.

The fight — an IBF World Title Elimination fight, with the winner earning the right to challenge IBF title-holder Josh Taylor — had been stopped by McGirt before the 12th-round bell.

McGirt was seen on video pleading with Dadashev to let him end the fight.

“Max, you’re getting hit too much,” McGirt said after the 11th round. “Please, Max, Please.”

Dadashev wouldn’t give up so McGirt ended the fight by telling the ringside physician, “That’s it, doc.”

“I didn’t want him to go in the 12th round either,” Dadashev’s manager Egis Klimas told ESPN after the fight.

But he didn’t think his boxer was in serious danger.

“It never looked like Max was, like shook down, or he was already, like, going down,” Klimas said, “I never saw that.”

The fight was the co-main event on the Friday card aired by ESPN.

“I just hope that Maxim is all right,” said Matias after the fight, per The Washington Post. “He is a great fighter and a warrior.”

The neurosurgeon who performed the two-hour surgery on the boxer Saturday morning told his manager that Dadashev was showing signs of severe brain damage, ESPN reported.

Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev died Tuesday after suffering a similar brain injury during Friday's fight in Maryland against Subriel Matias of Puerto Rico. He was 28.

Santillan (19-6-2), a super lightweight, made his pro debut in 2015. Eight of his 19 victories came by knockout. He was the son of fighter Hugo Alfredo Santillan and was from the same region, Santa Fe, as Marcos Rene "Chino" Maidana.

According to ringside reports, Santillan's nose began to bleed in the fourth round and, though he raised his arm in victory after the fight, he passed out as the judges were announcing the draw -- scored 95-95, 93-97 and 96-94 -- against Abreu (10-1-1).

"Upon admission to the hospital, he had successive kidney failure and he did not come out of his coma," Olocco said. "He had swelling of his brain and he never recovered consciousness. The swelling continued to worsen, and it affected the functioning of the rest of his organs."

    Patrick Day

Boxer Patrick Day Dies From Traumatic Brain Injury Suffered in Super Welterweight Fight
    ALAA ABDELDAIEM 16 HOURS AGO

    © Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

Patrick Day dies after suffering traumatic brain injury in welterweight fight

Junior middleweight Patrick Day has died from injuries sustained in his 10th-round knockout in Chicago on Saturday night, the boxer’s management company, DiBella Entertainment, announced on Wednesday.

According to the statement, Day succumbed to the traumatic brain injury he suffered in his title bout loss to defending champion Charles Conwell. He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team at the time of his death.

"On behalf of Patrick's family, team, and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury," the statement read.

Day, 27, fell to the canvas on Saturday after falling under a barrage of punches in the 10th and final round. Day was treated by a doctor in the ring and then was rushed off on a stretcher by paramedics and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery and fell into a coma shortly afterward.

As of Sunday evening, Day was still in a coma and was in “extremely critical condition,” per DiBella Entertainment.

In an emotional open letter to Day on Monday, Conwell said he had replayed the fight "over and over in my head" and was riddled with feelings of guilt and regret over the outcome.

"If I could take it all back I would. No one deserves for this to happen to them," Conwell wrote in the post. "I prayed for you so many times and shedded so many tears because I couldn't even imagine how my family and friends would feel."

DiBella Entertainment added that Day's death made it "very difficult to explain away or justify the dangers of boxing at a time like this."

"This is not a time where edicts or pronouncements are appropriate, or the answers are readily available. It is, however, a time for a call to action," the team said. "While we don't have the answers, we certainly know many of the questions, have the means to answer them, and have the opportunity to respond responsibly and accordingly and make boxing safer for all who participate. This is a way we can honor the legacy of Pat Day. Many people live much longer than Patrick's 27 years, wondering if they made a difference or positively affected their world. This was not the case for Patrick Day when he left us. Rest in peace and power, Pat, with the angels."

Huang - brain dead at 10 years old

Boy 'brain dead' after being relentlessly thrown by judo coach in central Taiwan
Boy thrown 27 times, family of injured boy could sue judo coach for negligent homicide

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A young boy is fighting for his life and could remain in a vegetative state even if he survives, after he was was thrown nearly 30 times in a judo class last week.

The seven-year-old student from Nanyang Elementary School in Taichung City's Fengyuan District, surnamed Huang (黃), attended his second week of judo classes in the basement of a gymnasium operated by Ruisui Elementary School at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday (April 21). During class, the 67-year old coach, surnamed Ho (何,) ordered a 10-year-old student to perform a shoulder throw on Huang multiple times.

After several throws, Huang began to complain of pain in his feet and head, and pleaded with the coach not to be thrown any further, even vomiting at one point. Unmoved, Ho ordered the child to be thrown 20 times.

In a video of the incident Huang can be seen crying and begging on his knees for the punishment to end. However, Ho then personally throws the child another seven times.

At around 9 p.m., Huang reportedly passed out, turned pale, and became unresponsive. Ho then called for an ambulance that rushed him to Feng Yuan Hospital for emergency treatment, reported Liberty Times.

Doctors found that Huang's injuries resembled those from a car crash and including a severe intracranial hemorrhage, which prompted them to perform an emergency craniotomy. After the operation, doctors declared that Huang was in a "brain dead state," and if he survives, he will likely remain in a vegetative state.

When visiting the hospital after the child underwent surgery, Ho initially claimed the child had fallen on his own. It was only after learning about the serious nature of his injuries did Ho admit that he and a student had thrown him many times.

When police took Ho in for questioning on April 23, he claimed the boy had cried when being thrown in previous classes and presumed he was complaining without good reason. Ho was then investigated for negligent bodily harm (過失傷害), before being released without bail.

Cho Chun-chung (卓俊忠), head prosecutor of the Taichung District Prosecutor's Office, said that Huang's parents pressed charges against Ho for negligent bodily harm and that they are not ruling out pressing charges for negligent homicide (過失重傷害) if their son dies, reported UDN. Huang's father said it would take a miracle for him to regain consciousness and he demanded an apology and explanation from Ho.

    Leandro Pereira do Nascimento Lo

Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Leandro Lo shot dead
The fighter got into an argument with a drunk man

The Brazilian wrestler Leandro Lo, one of the world's top jiu-jitsu fighters and an eight-time world champion in the martial art, died on Sunday after being shot in the head by a man he argued with at a party in Sao Paulo, Brazil's largest city.

The murder occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning at the exclusive Club Sirio, in the south zone of Sao Paulo, where the athlete had gone with friends to enjoy a performance by a popular music group at a party.

"The idol of a sport, Leandro Lo leaves us materially," the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Sport Confederation (CBJJE) said in a statement.

"We offer homage and reverence to the one who helped and inspires so many people to wear the kimono around the world."

According to witnesses, the wrestler got into an argument for reasons still unclear with a man who was apparently drunk and whom he pinned down with a typical martial arts armlock in an attempt to calm him down.

Once free, the assailant pulled out a gun and shot the world champion in the head.

He was eventually transferred to a hospital, where he was diagnosed as brain dead.

His assailant, who fled after the crime, was declared a fugitive, although the Sao Paulo Military Police said they had already identified him.

Leandro Pereira do Nascimento Lo, 33, was an eight-time world jiu-jitsu champion in five different categories and won five World Cup titles in the sport, as well as eight Pan-American titles in the sport.

The fighter, who won his first world title in 2012 in the lightweight category, was still active and in May this year he won a new world title, but in the middle-heavyweight category.

"The first title was the feeling of becoming world champion and this last one was the feeling of still becoming world champion, the two best feelings of my life," the fighter said in a post on his social media.

The Brazilian was scheduled to compete in the coming days in a championship in the United States.

Yora Tade, a 24-year-old up-and-coming kickboxer from the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, has died days after suffering a blow to the head during a national championship.

The athlete was rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai on Sunday after a “hard knock on his head” took him down during the final match of the National Kickboxing Championship, the hospital told CNN Wednesday. He was in Chennai to compete in the Wako India Seniors National Kickboxing Championship, The Arunachal Times reported.

Tade collapsed in the ring after opponent Kesav Mudel kicked him in the head during the match in Chennai on Sunday, the second such fatality in as many months, Agence France-Presse reported. The mixed martial arts expert was competing in the Indian edition of the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations tournament.

“The patient was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition and died during treatment,” a doctor at the Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital told AFP.

The mixed martial arts expert succumbed to his injuries while in the ICU on Tuesday “without responding to treatment,” the hospital said.

Police are investigating, and authorities were working to return Tade’s body to his hometown. His death came after the July demise of Nikil Suresh, 23, who also died from a brain injury after being punched in the face by his opponent while competing in a state tournament in Bangalore, AFP said.

Tade’s death reverberated throughout the kickboxing world, starting with his home state.

“Jolted to learn that our bright Kickboxer Yora Tade left for his heavenly abode,” tweeted Pema Khandu, the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh. “Too early to leave us, dear Tade! No words to express my grief. You will ever be in our hearts. Condolences to bereaved family, friends & admirers. May your journey to ultimate abode be peaceful!”

“I am extremely shocked & sad to hear the sudden demise of Late Yora Tade; a young promising boxer of our state,” tweeted Mama Natung, the state’s minister of sports and youth affairs. “It’s a great loss for Sports fraternity of our state in general. My deepest condolence to the bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace.”
    Another tragic death.

    UPDATED 1 HOUR AGO

He was sent to a martial arts club to pick up self-defence lessons, but instead, an eight-year-old boy in China was allegedly beaten and left for dead by the very trainer meant to protect him, the day after his enrolment.

The boy’s parents had signed him up for a year’s worth of lessons at the Chongde Juying Martial Arts Sports Club starting on June 17, paying a reported 7,680 yuan (S$1,440) for him to be trained at the club in Qingdao, Shandong.

But on June 18, the boy was taken to the Third People’s Hospital in the eastern Chinese province’s Chenyang district and was declared dead on arrival. Medical records cited by Chinese daily The Paper revealed that his heart had stopped about 20 minutes before he reached the hospital.

The Chenyang branch of Qingdao’s Public Security Bureau said in a statement on Monday that three people linked to the club – the couple in charge of the club and one coach – were arrested at around 2pm on June 18 over an alleged criminal case of intentional harm that led to one death.

Investigations are ongoing, with the club’s operations halted.

In a video that has been circulated online, a man can be seen attempting to prop up a boy, who is apparently feeling faint, on a chair in what appears to be a classroom. The boy, who is wearing an orange T-shirt with the martial arts club’s name on its back, falls off his seat onto the floor as soon as the man stops supporting him.

As he lies motionless on the floor, a woman’s voice can be heard saying: “If you keep doing this, your mum has told me, she will not pick you up for one year.”
I'm starting a new thread off the Martial Arts Deaths thread that focuses on Child Deaths at Martial Arts Schools.
