Picked up The Master today. I'm REALLY glad that I did NOT get the version released by Red Sun.

Three new legitimate Shaw releases in one week. Hopefully the momentum of more frequent releases will continue.

Human Lanterns is just 10 days away. And there's ANOTHER new company releasing Brothers Five and Two Champios of Shaolin on the 15th of June or July, I can't remember which. Then they are releasing The Heroic Ones very soon after. And then they have like 9 other titles they haven't announced yet. It's a very good time to be a Shaw fan. And yeah you were smart not to get the Red Sun version. They fuked up the transfer and the picture quality is kinda bad (typical bootleg stuff...). But the Media Blasters version is crystal. Im so glad to have my hiss and crackle free English dub accompanied by perfect picture quality.

I wonder if the new company releasing Shaws will have them available at BB or CC? (actually, the CC in my area doesn't always get as many m.a. movies like they used to).

The transfer of The Master was excellent, and Heroes of the East was also outstanding. I was lurking on kungfucinema, and some seemed to be complaining about the quality of Media Blasters' The Master release for whatever reasons. I really did not see anything wrong with it. I'd like to have seen Wang Lung-Wei and Yuen Tak (Yuan Te) interviewed as well, but otherwise I didn't notice any flaws in it.

They are complaining that it is not anamorphic. I guess if you have a huge widescreen TV movies need to be anamorphic. Anyways, I got Human Lanterns today.

    Just watched Human Lanterns. AWESOME!!!!!

Also saw Soul of Chiba recently. Bad movie with really good fights. Chiba's in top form and Bronson Lee and Bolo have a great fight scene. Chiba should have done more HK action. I didn't realize how fast he was. It's sped up in some scenes, but in other scenes it's not sped up and he's unbelievably fast.

Is Soul of Chiba the one where Chiba's character uses some kind of machine to wire himself up to increase his punching speed (like Bruce Lee is reputed to have done in real life)? And a Chinese villain that uses a crane-type style? If so, I remember that one.

I'm looking forward to Human Lanterns. I liked it when it was originally released, but will almost certainly like it even better now. Today I picked up The Machine Girl, a Japanese movie about a schoolgirl who loses an arm and gets it fitted with some kind of machine gun or something...haven't watched it yet. Looks pretty over-the-top, but interesting. It's released by Tokyo Shock.

I was just wondering whether or not to get that at the store. It looks so cool. Tell me what you think. And yeah Soul of Chiba is that movie you are thinking of and Luk Chuen is the crane style villain (from Killer's Romance and City Cops and he choreographed Iron Dragon Strikes Back, Killer Constable and The Dammed aka Battle of Shaolin).

I'll let you know what I think of it when I've watched Machine Girl. I'm planning on watching it later tonight.

Earlier today I bought Godzilla Raids Again almost on an impulse buy. I got it because it's the only old (1950s to early- mid-'70s) Godzilla movie I've never seen. It's actually the very first Godzilla sequel and is in black and white.

BTW, where did you pick up Human Lanterns, BB or Suncoast?

I'd be interested in seeing Soul of Chiba again. Now that I know it's Luk Chuen, it should be more interesting to see him and Chiba in a movie together. I think Chiba would've been good in one of the older Lau Kar-Leung or Sammo Hung-directed films (1985 or earlier).

I found it at Best Buy, but it isn't supposed to come out until tuesday. I checked both stores in my area and the second one I checked had it on the shelf.

And I saw Killer's Romance last night. The final fight with Luk Chuen was pretty decent, but there were a couple other really good fights in this movie. Simon Yam surprised me with how good his handwork is.

    Jethro:
Well, I watched both The Machine Girl and Godzilla Raids Again last night.

The first thing you notice about Machine Girl is that it's very much a direct-to-DVD-looking movie; it simply has that look to it. It isn't a boring movie, in fact I pretty much liked it. If you can imagine a kind of combination of live-action anime, torture porn, ninja film, and martial arts spoof, that kind of summarizes it. In fact, I dare say it's a LOT funnier and more competent as a spoof than any American attempts to purely spoof m.a. movies. Some things are gross, but it's so over-the-top that the violence is cartoonish and can make (me) laugh. There's also a Yakuza/ninja boss with a distinctive "devil-horn" hairdo. Don't expect good martial arts skills; the stars appear like they might've learned a little kickboxing in preparation. If you want a hilarious, bloody comedy, you may like it, too.

I'd rate Machine girl as somewhat inferior to Stacy, another Japanese blood-fest/comedy/horror spoof that also appears like a straight-to-video film, about a worldwide epidemic that causes girls to become flesh-eating zombies (which, for whatever reason, are referred to as "Stacies") when they turn about 16 years old. Stacy better combined outrageous spoofing with a bit more serious message, something not easy to do.

As for Godzilla Raids Again, all I can say is, no wonder it was never in wide circulation. Boring! Also, in several scenes with Godzilla fighting Anguirus, the camera is undercranked like Lo Wei would later become so fond of. Godzilla and all the giant Japanese movie monsters need to be filmed mostly in slower motion, which gives a far more realistic impression of their supposed gigantic size. Most of the movie is men and women talking to each other over the radio. I actually fell asleep towards the end (the movie is 81 minutes), and missed the actual ending...when I woke up, the screen was back at the main menu. What really hurt the movie (for any other giant monster fans) is the absence of Ishiro Honda as the director, and Akira Ikufube(sp?) as the musical composer. That probably accounts for this movie's inferiority.

  15. Godzilla Raids Again was released as Gigantis The Fire Monster in the US edit dub. It's the 2nd Godzilla, and the 1st to show another monster. I think it's OK. It's not the best, and maybe to ride on the success of the 1st one, but it had to start somewhere. I have all the Godzillas.

I haven't gotten it, it's not released yet, but I can't wait to get The Ninja Collection, from Rarescope. It has 4 Filmark ninja classics. All but one I already have, but the prints I have a fair fullscreen jobs, well one is widescreen but the dub is slightly off(Ninja: American Warrior), so I hope this one is not the same print. The other 3 are Ninja In the Killing Fields(aka Ninja Connection), this one isn't that great, but it does have Ninja master Stuart Smith. The other one is Bionic Ninja(aka Ninja Assassins), which is really good. I like this one quite a bit. And, if I recall... Ninja Deathcode? I may be wrong, but that title is the one I don't have already in anyform, unless it's a retitling. So, I'm looking forward to this, I just hope these are in decent quality prints.
