    Hi Nick,

Yes!!! the Gum Sau can be used in the way Master Kwok uses it, and with great success. My Sifu an instructor under Samuel Kwok as well as having Black Belts in several other arts including TKD and Kenpo. I have seen him use the Gum Sau in this way.

The Gum Sau must make contact above the kickers knee. This takes all of the power out of the kick, and can damage the kickers leg if he is doing a snapping type round kick as in TKD. The Gum Sau making contact in this way can cause the kicker to hyperextend his leg. The key to this use of Gum Sau is angle of execution and contact above the knee!

    Hope this helps!

This will never work against a decent kicker in real time.

If you're close enough to gum the knee you are close enough to use a better counter than that (one that doesn't involve dropping your hand and exposing your head).

Besides a good kicker wont throw a head kick from that range

Look at these guys...do you honestly think that would work against them?

Honestly some of the hokey c_rap peddled by the 'Grand Masters' out there will get you killed

Yeah, can work, but as a last-ditch panic thing, and there are far better things to do with the range and far safer defaults.

As for the Carlson-Sam partnership - great business! The long lanky step in Sam's teaching on that vid at about 2 mins would work once, if lucky, against anyone competent.

It would have been nice to see more WC stuff working into close range/clinch where the good set-ups and flow into the JJ would come in in that seminar. Maybe there was some more...? It seemed like a waste of an opportunity to teach all that shonky long range stepping stuff with a mostly static partner. Just a couple of points.

BTW, I just thought I'd come back and mention, although it sounds like I'm dissing him, and although he does a lot of things I don't agree with technically and in terms of training paradigms, the seminar should offer something for anybody.

Sam's strengths are in the subtlety, softness and speed in deflection: very soft, yet very hard.
