Do all these similarities point to there being a likely common source for Southern CMA? Maybe the legends about a "Southern Shaolin Temple" do have some basis in fact after all?
Good thread!
I see a lot of discussion about complaints re: the time spent in training.
But how about another isssue? How about the fact that you are training in something involving fighting?...
Can anyone clarify the origins of Pigua?
I've heard that it's actually a fairly modern (20th century) reconstruction. Is that true?
Hi,
Does anyone know about this style called Lohan Chuan taught by master Carl Totton?

I am interested in this quote:
Learn contemporary wushu.
When I was a kid I swallowed without questioning the story that ALL martial arts ALL over the world originated at Shaolin!
Looking back at it with some common sense, this is clearly ridiculous....
Just curious about the Hung Gar taught by Ark Wong.
Was it the same as the famous style taught by Wong Fei Hung and others? Was it a branch? What exactly was the relation?
Here is a description...
I grew up on the stories that CMA had all these wonderful health benefits that would keep away disease and ensure longevity. I bought into all the talk of qigong, meditation, marrow washing, and...
I preferred IKF when it has black-and-white photos.
It looks a mess now with the whole thing full of glossy colour pictures.
And the covers really suck nowadays as well. I liked the covers in...
Hi, I am pretty confused about the links between Tai Tzu, Tongbei, Chen taiji and Shaolin.
I read some opinions that Chen taiji came from something called Tai Tzu, and other places I read that it...
Here's a pretty interesting documentary I found on Tongbeiquan.

What seems very intriguing is how similar some of their training looks to Splashing...
I'm quite disappointed to learn that Green Dragon made up this Stone Warrior stuff.
Did they also make up their Iron palm and Iron vest material? Or is that at least genuine?
Is this a Southern praying mantis style?
Brendan Lai used to rate South African kung fu guys very highly. He used to go out there and visit with one of your top guys IIRC.
He was also impressed with the discipline and condition of the...
Just wondering if the Lee Kam Wing lineage of 7* incorporates much body and hand conditioning? From what I have heard of this system of mantis, it appears to be a wonderful and very comprehensive...
Is there even such a thing as red cinnabar palm?
Isn't this one of the fake BS arts in the 72 consummate Shaolin arts pulp fiction?
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
You mean he gave them the whole spiel about how "we are unique gentlemen" and "we forge our bodies in the fire of our will"?
That's priceless!
:D
He sounds like he was a...
7* is not really a style a know anything about. But it does sound very fascinating.
Is it related to Wah Lum in any way, given that Wah Lum is also a praying matis style.
When you say that the...
It's a shame. Looks like a great style. And Chan Poi seems in amazing shape for his age.
They used to have branches all over the world at one stage. Wonder what happened. I believe the HQ is still...
I've got a magazine (Fighting Arts) from about 1990 and he is in it, definitely teaching Wah Lum praying mantis. The other teacher in the article with him is David Hawkins. Both were wearing Wah Lum...
I remember many years ago that Derek Frearson was teaching Wah Lum under GM Chan Poi.
Is he still involved with Wah Lum or not?
Nice Wushu!
Nothing against Bruce Lee ... just find it ironic that he's credited with introducing kung fu in the USA and more importantly with being the first to teach it to non-Chinese, when GM Ark Wong was...
That's a shame, but nonetheless I'll still be buying his book.
Just out of curiosity, do you believe there was a southern temple?
Is it part of the oral history of many arts? (wing chun, hung...
