Really love both the Manuals book and the Jingwu book, and I always recommend them to people interested in the real history of Chinese martial arts. I'd love to see a broader work from you exploring...

My usual haunts have been a little quiet lately.

interestingly here's a comparison picture with illustrations from Agrippa showing stance differences for single rapier and rapier and dagger.
I'd say the long stance comes from sword fighting, as it's found in pretty much all single sword systems from around the world. If you look at an extended thrust from a northern Jian form it's almost...
Kung Fu historian Ben Judkins describes the first picture as a Qing police patrol, not a group of revolutionaries. They are certainly equipped in such a fashion, and as has been pointed out they are...
The use of the Da Dao is well documented by the military in the Ming, Qing and Republican eras
Very interesting article here (warning, contains photos of beheadings)...
The Ming dynasty had fallen before the Qing dynasty took over China. The last Ming emperor and his immediate family died when Li Zicheng's rebel army seized Beijing and founded the short lived Shun...
Way to massively generalise in a massively inaccurate way.
Have you actually seen how diverse the various lines are?
"Chan Family" in these discussions means the Chan Yiu Chi line as practised by Chen Yong Fa and the Choy Lee Fut ancestral association.
There isn't some ****genous Chan family group that's...
It's not Chan family, it's the Jiangmen line from Wong Gong.
The technique is in the tiger form, tiger and dragon form, 5 animals form and continuous dual kicking form from that line.
In terms of...
I tend to see less of a clear distinction between kicking and punching range, I find it something of a false distinction.
If you train to retract your leg it means you don't drop it down unless you...
Yes, but I'm assuming this is group training?
In UK law since the 60s you are able to use reasonable force in self defence.
Indeed the exact wording is

Watch the videos in post #25 ;)
One of the Hung Gar systems I studied had a 10 animals form, and Choy Li Fut has two. I believe LKFMDC's CLF has one.
I believe that while Biu means tiger cub what it refers to is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_golden_cat
This is a pretty bread and butter San Shou catch (indeed, it's even in Cung Le's book) . The key is that there is no "chasing with both hands". You CATCH the kick with both hands, you DEFEND the kick...
The final section of that article explains why.
If you catch their wrist on you shoulder and drive down into Gum Jin over their upper arm/shoulder, it's a fairly quick and efficient arm lock.
Yes they are, they just have less exposure in the West. There were anti-Japanese riots in China last year over Japan's lack of contrition for it's wartime activities (there were contemporary...
I think it depends at what range you use it. At long range it's pretty dicey but at contact range it's similar to push hands movements, or of course a cross collar choke.
I'd have done Judo as a kid
I'd have done Enshin instead of TKD
I'd have started yoga early on
I'd have learned WAY more about fitness and conditioning
