Rented Shaolin Soccer this weekend. It was a lot better than I expected. The special effects were pretty cool.
Now you have to check out Steven Chow's "The God of Cookery", which is my favorite of his to date. A little bit of kung fu mixed in there (a brief scenario where Steven is "trained" by the 18 Bronzemen at a Shaolin temple), and some really cheeky humor.
It's not as big budget as Shaolin Soccer, but I think the humor works better. I especially enjoyed Karen Mok's character -- the makeup crew have to be commended for making a beauty like her appear so homely, but it is part of her character's charm, much like Vicky Zhao Wei initially in Shaolin Soccer, so it works.
Might have to dig a little to find it a video store, but it's worth it!
For the record, I wasn't too pleased with how Miramax handled the release of Shaolin Soccer here in the states -- I saw the DVD at Blockbuster the other day and cringed when I read the tagline on the box -- "Get ready to kick some grass" :(
I heard the American DVD release has both the dubbed cut and the original subtitled version; is that true?
yup. Both versions.
Shaolin Family Soccer????
I saw this at the video store. Is this a real sequel?

No.
I have seen the trailer and it looks like it may be a good movie. It stars the iron head guy from Shaolin Soccer who gets disciplined for smoking on the soccer field.
I'm not even sure what that means in HK film. They have a totally different take on film franchises.
There are plenty of sequels in HKC, but Shaolin Soccer was made after this movie, so it is just obvious.
Fight BAck to School 2 was a good sequel. Part 3 was done by Wong Jing, so of course it has almost no relation at all. He doesn't even go back to school.
Take a look at The Real Jackie Chan is Back in NEW POLICE STORY by August West. August addresses the sequel problem in HK film.
I know what you meant, but I was just letting you know that there are actually a lot of real sequels.
This actually does seem to be a sequel to Shaolin Soccer. The original name is Silly Kung Fu family. The iron head guy is the only connection. It was made after Shaolin Socer to cash in on the iron head guy's popularity.
Anyways, the movie sucks. It is a bad Mrs. Doubtfire ripoff.
I am waiting for Image to release Retreat of the Godfather (D!ck Wei) and Revenge of the Scarface (Ken Lo).
How could it be a real sequel to Shaolin Soccer without Chow?
It's produced in Japan, but it's produced by Chow. See link for trailer.

'Shaolin Girl' Teaser Trailer
If you like Hong Kong actor/director Stephen Chow’s ‘Shaolin Soccer’ and ‘Kung Fu Hustle’, then you can’t miss this Japanese movie ‘Shaolin Girl’. Produced by Stephen Chow, the movie stars Shibasaki Kou (Dororo), Nakamura Toru (Sleeping Forest) and Eguchi Yosuke (White Tower). Stephen Chow doesn’t star in the movie as he is busy with his new movie ‘CJ7’ (previously titled ‘A Hope’).
