Fighting the Invisible Warrior

by John Cheng, MD

As martial artists, we like to think we can defend against a punch and a kick coming our way. We condition and train mentally and physically for that future encounter against the opponent to strike. How often are we prepared when the opponent is a microscopic enemy posing to threaten our health? Microscopic enemies that challenge our health constantly surround us. When scientists first proposed that these tiny microbes might be the cause of disease, the notion was dismissed as preposterous. How could something that small have any impact on a human body? However, the common cold and flu viruses can be debilitating enough to cause the strongest warrior to put down his sword.

What can we do to prepare ourselves for this battle? Illnesses can result from a more or less suppressed immune system. Many factors can contribute to a less than optimal functioning immune system, such as stress, smoking, chronic illness, or an unhealthy diet. As martial artists, we try to eliminate the previous factors mentioned and seek optimal health. Sometimes that is not enough.

When we do get sick with the common cold or flu, we can battle this with common cold and flu formulations found over-the-counter in our local pharmacies. However, the FDA issued a recent warning about a dangerous compound contained in many commonly used drugs. The ingredient, phenylpropanolamine (PPA), is found in numerous over-the-counter (OTC) cold and flu medications. This ingredient has been found to increase the risk of strokes, especially in women. Most retail outlets are pulling all drugs that contain PPA from their shelves. So please be selective and look at the labeling to avoid (PPA) products. Other OTC medications without PPA are considered safe and should not pose a problem.

You may be a candidate for a flu shot or antiviral medications to help with the reduction of severity and intensity of the flu. Please consult your healthcare provider if you have had symptoms of the flu for less than 48 hours.

Do be aware that the common cold and flu do not respond to antibiotics. However, complications from the cold and flu may arise after a week of symptoms that may require antibiotics. You should consult your health care provider if in any doubt.

There are other alternatives to the traditional OTC medications. Recent scientific research is suggesting the use of nutritional agents to offer relief and protection from cold and flu symptoms.

Echinacea is commonly recommended to help prevent and treat cold and flu infections. A number of clinical trials have demonstrated positive results in helping to boost immune function. Goldenseal contains berberine, a component that demonstrates significant antimicrobial activity against a wide range of organisms and immune stimulating properties.

Andrographis is an herb commonly used for the treatment of upper respiratory infections, fever, and sore throats. Preliminary evidence suggests that andrographis may also help to reduce the intensity and duration of the common cold.

Vitamin C and Zinc given in therapeutic doses at the onset of a cold may help reduce the duration and intensity of cold symptoms.

Although this list and suggestions is not all inclusive, it may give you more weapons in your arsenal to fight against the viral enemies this winter season. Remember to get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids.
